Snagged another Savage today! Got a question.

I had a Marlin 17HMR, that I just was not crazy about. I bought it off a guy needing money, great shooter, but the 17 mag does not pop my shorts, not as good as a hornet or .223, or 17 rem which I have had several. Local gunshop had a 110, older long action 30/06 with the steel warne weaver type bases silver soldered on from the factory, had Choate sporter stock /savage on recoil pad, trigger was nice, #3.5. It had set there for 2 months, deer season over here. I had $200 in the 17 w/scope, swapped even for the 06. Cleaned the barrel and bore looks great, added steel Millet rings, weaver type and a 4x12 Burris fullfield 1. I have some factory 150gr loads, and looked up my old go to load of IMR 4350, gonna crank a few out and shoot her in a day or two. They only made a few of these guns, had a 112 .223 with the bases silver soldered on, made 1992, I think. But this one has a round action in the rear, go figure. Any of you guys had one of these actions. I thought I did well on the trade.

For me I probably would have made the trade as well. So many cool things you can turn a 110 into. The 17 HMR has never really "popped my shorts" (to use your expression) either. I had a 22 WMR that was accurate and served its purpose, but now-a-days if a 22LR won't do it I go ahead and reach for a centerfire.

Can't say that I have owned any actions with the soldered on bases, but I have handled a few in LGS's and IIRC they were all Flat rears, FWIW.

I have one of the round rear actions with the soldered on bases that I got a smokin deal on. Turns out it was so cheap because the bases were so out of line I couldn't get any of my scopes to zero. I had to get the bases removed and have the action drilled and tapped ( had it done 8-40). It is now the action that my 280 ai build is on.

I had heard of alignment problems in the past, never had any with the one or two I fooled with. I put the action on my drilling and tapping jig that centers the action, they line up great, so good to go.
