i was looking at bushnell 3200 10x40 or votex cross fire proboly the 4x16x50 or 6x24,
just didnt want to be under powered, ive been an ar15 & handgun guy ,but am wanting to get into long range
my local range only goes out to 600
A price range would help also. There wide range of scopes that would fill the need of 600 yards shooting.
Also, are you wanting a standard reticle or something else like a mildot. Personally I would seriously look at getting a mildot. I never thought I would like them until I bought one on a whim. It has been the best gun purchase I think I have ever made. I use the reticle to range as well as holdover. The scope will work just just as good as a regular scope if you don't want to use the mildot. There are plenty of good choices also for mildot scopes.
Mildot ranging is easy also, target height x 1000 / mils in the scope = target distance in the same measurement as the target height.
Example:
a man 2 yards tall x 1000 = 2000 yards / 4 mils in the scope = a distance of 500 yards
You can use it to get more precise if you want. It doesn't matter what the input height is the output height is going to be the same, feet, meters, whatever. You just need to make sure your drop charts are in the same measurement or easily converted.

If you want a mil-dot invest in a Mil Dot Master. It is a slide rule type chart that shows mils or moa ranging, absolute need for some one like me learning how to use a mil-dot.
You can get them from SWFA along with a 10x scope for around $350.

I'm looking pretty hard at the Vortex Viper 6.5-20x50 in a mil dot for my 600 yd 243 I'm putting together. It's $500 from Cameraland. You didn't really say what you're budget will allow on the scope...

I've bought several optics from Cameraland. Both Doug and Neil are super to deal with on the phone.
Just my 2 cents worth...

I have been using a number of the Vortex Scopes in the last year and really like them. For the price, one great scope..........customer service is great too.

A lot of people shoot 600 yard competition with iron sights, so I would have to say the MINIMUM power would be 1X.Originally Posted by sw10pc
