    New Rifle Build. First Deer

I built this rifle from the action up. A large shank receiver new factory barrel in 6.5 Creedmoor, blind box magazine stagger feed, Boyd's stock.

I was not planning on using it for hunting this year, but shoulder surgery changed my on this. My doctor said I could hunt as long I was using a light recoiling rifle, so I used this one. My options for ammo, was factory 120 Gr. Amax yes I will take some heat for using target ammo.

At 151 yards this doe was out in the open with a broadside shot. I placed my 1/8 min dot on her left shoulder squeezed my accu trigger down she went. The bullet went into her left shoulder at the base of the spine, exit hole about the size of a golf ball.

    Very nice.

If any bullet is placed properly, it should do the job. Just use proper judgement and it looks like you did.

Nice looking rifle. I use 105 amax in my 243 win and it does a great job of dropping antelope from 100-350 yards.

Yes I do. I try to shoot them in shoulder or just behind to hit the spine. One shot on kill.

Was the spine shot intentional? Seems like a lot of wasted tenderloin that way? If worried about the Amax, I have read a number of guys very happy with them on deer.

Oops, didn't see the post right above mine. That answered my question.

By the way, thanks for your service and sacrifice. Hope the shoulder gets better.

I was not really trying to hit the spine, I just drifted off a little bit. After sitting in 15-20 deg weather hour before sun rise it's just a tad cool out. After skinning her out the tenderloin was not that bad, only had to cut off a bit on the end of it.

Shoulder is doing better, It was my honor to serve this great country.

Nicely done......killed my elk last year with an A-max bullet also seemed to work just fine.

I wouldnt say that a 120gr bullet is too light. the 110 accubonds in .257 are perfect. Most of the modern bullet designs are much more effective than the bullets of yesteryear.
A good wife and a steady job has ruined many a great hunter.
