    Another rebarrel project

Picked up one of E. Arthur Brown's custom Savage barrels in .260 Rem. Original plan was to rebarrel my Savage 110 that I previously rebarreled from 30-06 to 338-06. I like the 338-06 too much and now am in the hunt for a donor rifle/action for this project.

The barrel is advertised to work with any Savage centerfire action except for the short magnum and target action.

Any recommendations on what to look for in the donor rifle/action?

I know I need to be looking for the appropriate bolt face (.308) but seem to recall reading on this forum previously that either a long or short action will work.

Any small/standard shank, short or long action will work. Even if the donor has a magnum or 223 bolt head, you can swap to a .473 bolt head pretty easily and swap magazines if necessary. That said, a short action with a 308 bolt face would be "easiest".

My first build was a 260 on a staggerfeed 110 long action that started life as a 270, and it worked great.

Thanks Boiler. Forgot about the shank qualification, but as you said a short action with the .308 bolt face would be easiest.

Have a line on an older 110 in 30-06 that should do fine and make the stock selection that much easier.

My first build was a 22-250 on a 110 that started life as a 270. Only thing I had to do was swap the barrel, set the headspace and go. Mag fed just fine with no mods.

Personally, I would build on a long action. Short action does not allow you to seat the looooooong 140/142 gr bullets out where they need to be.

+1. Totally agree. Building on a long action is the way to go for most calibers. Less worries about OAL fitting in the mag.

Good point. Debating about adding bottom metal, which may make it interesting on the magazine.

I'll be running factory ammo out of it but will need to check OAL of the cartridges and 308 based magazines.

If you are using the factory DBM setup for a Centerfeed action, it won't be any more "interesting" than a Centerfeed blind mag. They both use the same magazine body metal.

Originally was thinking about dropping the action in to a Manner's T-5 stock and using their DBM chassis. Since I'm planning on shooting factory ammo, I'd agree it should be straightforward but if I start extending the COAL beyond 2.800", the magazine may be a factor.

Might be making this too hard and should quit worrying about the unlikely what ifs.

Manners does not make a Mini-Chassis for Savage actions.

AICS magazines are limited to roughly 2.89", Alpha Mag Type IIs 2.95", Savage factory DBM magazines are 3.00".

Thanks. That solves that problem. Their stock builder let me configure one with a Mini-Chassis, but expect I would have received a call from them if I had submitted the order. Looking a little closer at the website does show Rem 700 only.

Guess I'll go back with CDI for the bottom metal if that ends up being a must have.

Ended up purchasing a SA CF DBM varmint action from Jim over at Northlands, as well as a Criterion stainless match barrel in 260 Rem. I knew I was going to be in trouble when I called and history repeated itself. Almost as bad as Walmart. Go in for one thing and come out with a dozen.

Please modify that last post.......you maybe joking about selling that barrel here, but it's hard for us mods to know the difference sometimes.......It's against the rules to sell outside of the classifieds. I'll give you a little time to do it then I'll have to take action.

BTW, please read the rules if you haven't already.
