I am a new member and would like to know if the c.o.l that I measured of 2.465 with 55grn bullet for 22.250 sounds right.

Hornady's reloading manual lists the 55gr V-Max at 2.35"
I'll loaded them to 2.47" to get in the lands in a Factory Savage 22-250 barrel.
What Bullet are you using?

I am just starting to reload for the 22.250 and was looking for a good starting point with the V-Max in 50 to 55 grn. I need some advice. The c.o.l from the FV seemed so much greater than the book and the factory ammo I've been shooting.

I have several Savages, but the one I shoot the most is my 12FV 22-250. My c.o.l. with Sierra 55gr. Spitzers is 2.400".

I'd say thats a good measurement, Thats not the 9" twist barrel is it? My 22-250VLP had a 1-9" and had a shorter throat. But my buddy's 1-12" had a pretty deep throat 2.47" put him .010" in the lands

It is a 1:12. I tried it again and got 2.47". I am wondering if I should stay off the lands to start out? I have only reloaded .44 mag and .357 mag for revolvers. This is my first for rifle cartridges.

That sounds about right. I have mine loaded to 2.465" as we speak. That measurement is .015" off the lands in one rifle, but it is at the lands in another one. Measuring to the tip can be tricky though, as some bullet lengths will vary. Measuring to the ogive is more precise.

I usually start .015-.020 off the lands to start, but I'm sure others do it differently.

First off, you need to get a bullet seating depth tool to figure out YOUR jam length. Probably not the exact name in the catalog. You also need a bullet comparator. Get the one made by stoney point as well. Go to Sinclair international's web site and look it up. Once you've obtained your jam length you can begin setting back your bullet off the lands. During load development I load 5 rounds, all with middle charge weights, with the bullets .020, .010, and .005 off the lands. I just did some development on the 55gr. V-max and found the most accurate was .010 off the lands. I don't remember what the COL was but it doesn't matter much because you need to know your dimensions. Because of throat erosion other peoples COL may be different and when you're talking about loading them .005 off the lands there's not much room for error.

oh my bad, I just saw you already have a COL gauge. You need a comparator then. Measuring off the tip is inaccurate.
