    Collet Sizing 280 Ackley Cases

Was surfing Lee's web site and came upon the frequently asked question section for brass. Question was about collet sizing the Ackley brass. Their answer is the standard 280 Rem collet die can be used to size the Ackley...............has anyone tried this?

Haven't tried it with the 280AI (never had one) but it works great with 22-250 AI and 223 AI

Works with any of the improved cartridges where the neck dimensions aren't altered (all the commonly encountered Ackley cartridges are in this category). Some of the other types of improved cartridges move the shoulder forward and these won't work with the Lee dies.

It works fine with my 260AI using the 260 lee collet die.

Works great with 25-06 AI and produces very low runout. Very accurate ammo.

Re: Collet Sizing 280 Ackley Cases

Received my collet die set yesterday in hopes of improving the neck runout on my Nosler AI brass that was sized in a Lee F/L sizer die. Collet sizing didn't do much to improve the runout, necks still running in the .007" range. Would a better full length sizing die cure the crappy runout?

Re: Collet Sizing 280 Ackley Cases

I had a buddy that shoots a $4500 custom, that uses only Redding dies, etc and he had a "runout problem" as gaged by his measurements. He even started indexing all his bullets so the runout was at the same position, etc. Eventually he took the rifle and his ammo back to the gunsmith (same guy that made Charles Ballard's rifle- the guy who won the nationals in F class at Camp Butner this year). The gunsmith asked him if he ever shot the rounds with the runout problem. He said "No", The gunsmith set up at 300yds, shot his worse loads into perfect 10 and x groups, and that fixed the problem.
I say that to say, did you shoot the rounds with the runout problem? I forgot how much runout he had, but in his $600 Boughton 5C 32" 1.25" barrel, it didn't matter. Just a thought

Re: Collet Sizing 280 Ackley Cases

No, haven't got into neck turning...............yet. The Nosler brass right out of the box shows a runout of .001. Fire formed it's .002-.003. Sized in the Lee F/L die it jumps to between .003 to .008. Loads that I shot in new brass Saturday with the 150 SMK shot just under 3/4". Brass sized in the Lee F/L die was shot Sunday with 168 SMK and 162 gr A-Max and that's when groups opened up to over an inch and caused me to check runout. I plan to refire the 150 SMK loads to se if groups are the same as the first set.

Redding Dies on order and as soon as I can afford it, the Sinclair 4000 neck turning kit will be added to my loading equipment with appropriate mandrels for my bench calibers.

Re: Collet Sizing 280 Ackley Cases

Fired the out of wack cases sized in the Lee full length die and remeasured runout. Cases are back to measuring .001-.002 so the Lee F/L dies was the problem. Received my Redding full length die yesterday and ran a few cases through it and checked runout, RCBS CaseMaster showed a runout of .001 - .002 so I'm good to go now
