How high of an moa base do i need?

    To get a 308 to 1000?
Vortex viper 6.5-20 which according to the vortex website has 65 moa total adjustment...? Will 20 moa be enough or do I need to go with something like a Farrell 30 moa base? Or even more?

If the scope is optically centered @ 100 yards with a flat rail and does have the full 65 minutes of travel then a 20MOA rail will be more than enough and you will be able to sight in @ 100 and go out past 1000 yards with a 308 depending on the load.

    A typical .308W will need 38 to 40 MOA at 1k from from a 100y zero.

Deerhunter If the scope is optically centered @ 100 yards with a flat rail and does have the full 65 minutes of travel then a 40MOA rail would put the scope bottomed out with a 370 yard zero which would allow almost no windage adjustment. Now all this is dependent on the scope working like it should and using Black Hills 175gr match ammo for the calculations. The 20MOA rail gives the ability to zero at 100 yards for beginning load work or hunting and still have adjustment left when he goes to the 1000 yard adjustment.

Using a scope with 65 MOA of adjustment and a 20 MOA rail I can get out to about 810 yards without going to a hold over with my .308. I would strongly suggest a 40 MOA rail. EGW will machine one of their 20 MOA rails to make 40 MOA on request for a small fee additional to the usual 20 MOA base price.

A better solution might be a 20 MOA rail and a scope with considerably more elevation adjustment. I learned this the hard way in the beginning trying to save money purchasing less expensive scopes. A 40 MOA rail is a lot cheaper though.
