I bought a Savage Hog hunter in 308win. Do to health problems, I haven't been to the range yet. It's ready to go, just need to get out there.
What range do you go to? I go to the one in Junction City Ky.

So have either of you gentleman had a chance to take the HogHunter out to the range yet? If so what did you think I am seriously considering one.
I took mine out a couple days ago and I can't lie it's pretty amazing for the price and once you get the sights zeroed it's a tack driver with good ammo
I have one in 223 and I have to say it may be Savages best kept secret.
I have a hog hunter in 308 and I simply love it.
I must admit that it is my first bolt gun, I'm use to semi-autos, but I simply love the hog hunter.
Definitely accurate and a keeper.
I've taken mine out (.308) and am having serious accuracy issues. Factory ammo & factory loads.
I've installed a Smith Enterprise's Brake and that really helped. Had to re-zero with the brake.
Using "Magtech" ammo, I get the best accuracy. 1.25" groups @ 100 yeards.
I'm not liking the short barrel.
BUT That is MY opinion.
What kind of grouping have you gotten at 200 yards?
Me?
Pie Plate.
Trying to get the muzzle jump under control first.
I have a Hog Hunter as well and love it. I have a brake on mine, just mounted a SS10x42 scope - if I hold it steady, I get better than minute of angle groups.
I reload for mine - the fast twist will stabilize a heavier bullet. I'm having great luck with Nosler Custom Competition 175 grain match bullets.
I don't remember what I've got for a brake, but it works really well - recoil is less than a .243, according to a friend that has one. I do find that the more I concentrate on the trigger, my hold, and my breathing, the better my targets look regardless of if I have the brake on or off.

How do you like the ss10x42, because im looking into one for my hog hunter build
I'm thinking of getting a HH in .308 in a few months. Everything points to YES for this rifle... iron sights, threaded barrel...
I reload my own ammo.
Getting better accuracy than with factory ammo.
I haven't installed a muzzle break as of yet.
I have several hundred Nosler 155gr CC for now and am using IMR4895 & H380 with good accuracy, at least with my 66 year old eyes.
Still working on Sierra's 165gr Game King & their 165gr JHP.
Have some bullets all loaded up, but with 1 ft of snow,I really don't want to go to the range now.
I've tried Varget and it was close to the H380, but with the price and lack of availability I'm not going with it.
Want to try some Reloader 15 when it comes available for the heavier bullets.
But I think I'll stay with the H380 in the lighter bullets because it meters so well.
BUT, I'm still open for suggestions.
If you decide to get a HH, make sure you check the gun out.
Mine had the rear flipup sight missing.
Otherwise than that no problems, and I love the gun.
As I said in my first post, this is my first bolt gun.
You probably already know this, but I'm going to say it anyhow, just in case.
A friend told me to put some grease on the bolt lugs to help from wear, found out it also made the bolt a lot easier to operate.
I always oil my guns but after I put slide glide grease on the lugs it works better.IMO
I'm picking one up in .308 tomorrow, going to build a 6.5 Creedmoor. Jim had one Criterion bull in stock.
After working through a bunch of load development I tried some of my M1A rounds, 41.7 4064 with a 175 smk in LC brass at 2.8 COAL, it shoots about 5/8th inch groups. I use a 16 x SS scope, its a good combo on ths gun. I get to use the LC brass instead of Win or Lapua brass and it shoots very well, I changed out the 3 port muzzle brake for a claymore brake to keep the short barrel noise down a bit, the 3 port brake was better at recoil reduction but the Claymore is tolerable on recoil and much better at sending noise down range. Working up a 155 Nosler load now, been trying IMR 4064 but will go to IMR 4895 and see what happens.
I am running a Hog Hunter in .308 in a B&C Tactical Medalist with an EGW 20 base and a 16x FFP mil dot. I also added a YHM QD Brake for my can and I have to say I am extremely pleased. Currently shooting 168 gr factory Federal Gold Medal Match and getting sub-half inch groups. Its great.
My HH is one of my favorite guns, I may sell off some of my other rifles as the HH will do almost everything I need for hog, deer, black bear, and even elk.
The gun is the perfect size and I love the iron sights, and the threaded barrel .... not to mention the moss green stock (which I really do like). It is the perfect utilitarian hunting gun. Like I have mentioned on another post, mine has a Weaver 1-3 power, which fits my purpose for this gun perfectly !!!
I just wish Savage would have come out with this gun in 2014 in 338 Fed, that would have been awesome.
