112 J Series Action Project

Wanted to start by saying thank you to all that helped make some decisions and work out part of the process on this project. The members here were extremely helpful and extremely appreciated. Though I didn't ask a lot of questions, the wealth of information from searching old threads helped solve innumerable problems.

I bought a Savage 112 J single shot in 223 about three months ago from a local pawn. I paid 300 for it and considered it a bargain. Was in great shape. Decided to use the action to make my first target rifle.

Components -
28" Shilen Bull 6mmBR barrel
NSS Barrel Nut
NSS Recoil Lug
PTG 308 bolt head
Rifle Basics Sav-2 Trigger set to 7 ounces currently
Bolt handle (southernordnancesales off eBay)
Stock - Me (ordered a Blank from Microfit)
Pillar Bed Inserts from 122armory on eBay
Tubbs 4 way adjustable butt plate
Graco adjustable comb kit (1" round base style)
EGW flat scope base
Warne Mounts - Will replace with Burris Signature (inserts) when I start shooting past 600.
Vortex Viper HS 4-16x44 (currently lusting over a Sightron Siii 8-32x56mm )

I worked really hard on improving the action. Found rather large burrs on the face of the action it and gently worked them off. Bolt lift was excessive and after hours of research and then many hours of polishing etc. I now have about eight and a half pounds of lift on the action to cycle (taped a wire to end of handle and then used scale hooked to wire to lift). That was tested with the original bolt. The new bolt gives significantly more leverage.

Stock actions were very limited on the medium action series. After much searching and looking at lead times I decided to build my first stock from scratch. After around 60 hours with a rasp in hand (and a socket wrapped in sandpaper) I'm very happy with it and I just finished polishing her today. I did use a 3/4 bit in my router to start the barrel channel straight. Has approximately 13 coats of auto clear and shines like glass! Bedded stock and pillars with Devcon Steel.

Now to start reloading my brass and get her to the range for break in. Have 105 gr VLD Berger selected for the 1:8 barrel.

Good job and the finished product looks well worth the effort you put into it. It'a a "Real Beauty".
My first was a 110 V in .223. Has had a "few" caliber changes since new and it's one of my favorite shooters. Don't "Ever" plan to part with it. It's the rifle that got me "hooked" on the Savage platform. Again, you did good!

Thanks guys for the comments, much appreciated. Really looking forward to load development and hopefully I can shoot some two's at 100 once I get it worked out. Need to order an Edgewood bag for it on Monday...hopefully they have what I need in stock.

As for future projects, I think I will take the next couple months to work on loads for this rifle and my 110fp 308. Also have a recent CMP HRA purchase that I need to work on some and try out different loads. But I do have a Model 25 in 223 that has the plastic stock. I bedded it and get good groups routinely, but.........hmmm....could carve up a varmit style stock for it?...

Wonderful build, it will be a very accurate rifle, I'm gonna be working on a .223 build soon and maybe I'll have to whittle up a stock like yours. The strength and stiffness that a wood stock has, particularly the wide fore end one's have is amazing. Have fun shooting
