For a hunting rig why use such a heavy barrel contour? Here's a little knock around carbine in .308 I did a while back. It started out as a wood stocked model 10GL in .243.
I used parts from the classifieds here and the barrel is a .308 sporter that has been cut down to 16" threaded and braked. By cutting down a sporter you're keeping the "Fat" end anyway :)
Also got an old flatback detachable mag stock and converted it to lefty as well as significantly reducing the length of pull beffore doing a "sponge camo" paint job on it and sealing it up with dull coat. Of course the usual tuning of the 3 screw trigger and bolt lift kit were performed as well.
I've been meaning to loose the picatiiny rail and heavy vortex diamondback I had sitting around, and replacing it with 2 piece standard leupold bases and rings setup with an ultralight. That would also bring down the scope closer to the axis of the bore where I could lose the Kydex cheek riser I made and further cut the weight. The whole rig is 37" long brake included and the same length as a 10/22. easily well under your weight requirement. It's very accurate and has plenty of energy. Velocity loss with the 16" barrel is negligible and I promise there is not a whitetail in the country that wants to line up in the crosshairs.
