What is a bolt lift kit?

Can someone please explain what a bolt lift kit is and what it does and why would someone need or want one? Do I need one on my 12FV .22-250?

In a Savage bolt there is whats called the "cocking piece sleeve", it rides on the face of the BAS ( bolt assembly screw). Every time the bolt is rotated the BAS rotates and the sleeve remains stationary resulting in a friction point between the two parts. There have been instances where the sleeve has actually worn into the BAS.

The "lift kit" is typically a shortened 38/357 case with a ball bearing secured ( glued) in the primer pocket to reduce the contact area between the BAS and sleeve thus reducing the friction.

Do you need one? Yes and no. Depends if you satisfied with the operation as it is now and your not getting excessive wear between the parts.

I think I'm gonna have to look at this closer. I'm not following the explanation.

How long does it usually take for the sleeve to wear into the BAS ?

Do you need to take anything off the BAS? Or is there enough play in the sleeve to make up for the added bearing and case?

You need to trim the BAS the thickness of the lift kit.
I have an older slotted BAS and it actually slides into the cocking sleeve. that would bind (compress) the firing pin spring quite a bit.
