Savage Rascal Mount and Scope question

    Hello,

I just bought my first Savage, a Rascal for my kids. I am new to Savage and 22lr, mostly shoot AR's and AK's... I was wondering if the standard OEM Rascal mount here: https://store.savagearms.com/magazines-misc-parts/accessories/scope-mount-kit-for-rascal.html ; will match up/fit ok with the following red dot scope here: http://www.amazon.com/Tasco-30mm-Rifle-Scope-Reticle/dp/B000GF1HKQ/ref=sr_1_7?ie=UTF8&qid=1380566073&sr=8-7&keywords=red+dot+22+scope .

I am trying to keep it simple for 100yds and in, probably more like 50 to 100ft. I thought the above would be a good set up but wanted to make sure it would fit. Thanks, Don

Depending upon how far apart the mounts are, the red dot scope might be too short to fit on both of them.
A low power traditional scope might work better, or better yet, teach the kids how to use Iron Sights.

    How old are they?

They are 7 and 9. I was going to teach them iron, I just thought the red dot would be nice. It doesn't look like a lot of people have experience with this rifle on here, or at least using a red dot with it. Thanks for the response.

I think there are very few rascal owners among us.
    Thoughts:
    1. A small red dot sight might attach securely to just one of the mounts.
    2. The large red dot sight you describe might be high enough to pull your kids' cheeks off the rifle in order to look through it. That's why a low power traditional optical scope might work better...it might be lower.
    3. That said, there is nothing inherently "wrong" with a red dot sight.

However you end up having them shoot with you, it really doesn't matter. The important thing is that they are shooting with you and they are safe.

    Good luck.

I'm going to buy I rascal for the kids, I was going to stay steel sights or a low power scope, my daughter had a hard time with the red dot on the 10/22.

I just saw on the EGW banner ad that they sell rails for the Rascal. You might wish to check with them.

DIP Inc, Diversified Innovative Products makes a Rascal base and I think they were the 1st to make it. I have EGW and DIP products. I prefer DIP not that there is anything wrong with EGW. DIP's bases are piccatinny style but seem to be more aimed towards using Weaver style rings primarily. EGW seems to be more aimed at Piccatinny but you can use Weaver. I know they will swap back and forth but they are not identical. Bob @ DIP is working on a B.Mag base too. I am actually amazed it is not already out.

Thanks for the good information. Yes the main thing is they come shoot with me. I was just tying to find a rail/scope combo that allows them to shoot close, and keep their cheek close to the stock.

A burris fastfire or something similar could easily fit on just one of the Savage scope rails. I use one on my Browning Buckmark for steel challenge and I love it.

Something like a micro red dot might be right up this project's alley as well. It looks like the scope mount you linked might be a bit tall, but if there were a shorter version, it seems like you'd be able to get a micro dot to cowitness, which may help the transition to iron sights later on.

As for reasonably inexpensive micro dots, I like those by Primary Arms. Aimpoint is the gold standard, of course, but if the project is on a limited budget, probably not an option.

My kids used the rascal with the peep sights for the first summer, I did however put a dab of orange paint on the very tip of the front sight. It made the sight much eaiser to see. They wanted an upgrade by the end of the summer so I took an old bushnell 22 scope and took the built in rings off of it. Then I used copper shims and a regular set of scope rings to attach it to the rascal scope bases. This gave me a very small light scope for a very small gun. It also gave me the most clearance for the kids to feed the shells into the gun. It took the kids awhile to get used to the shake of the scope, but they like shooting it now even better. I had to make a adjustable cheek rest out of foam and velcro so they could get a proper cheek weld on the stock. Savage should make a higher combed stock for this kids model.

I just wish they made a 22 like this when I was a kid, it's a great rifle.

I mounted a vortex sparc on my daughters rascal and it works great for her. she learned with the peep sight but after receiving a sparc for my 93r17 I decided to try one on hers too. The scope made getting on target considerably faster and she was firing faster as well once on target. My little girl is almost 7 and loves to shoot almost as much as Dad. Keep it fun, easy and safe and enjoy the fruits of your labour!
