    Which Scope?

I have recently put together my first savage. Its a savage SA mounted on a stockade woodchuck stock. I put a shilen match select ss 26" varmint countour barrel on it chambered in a 243 win. My main purpose of this rifle is to punch paper, shoot yotes, deer, and possibly an antelope at some point with it. I have narrowed my two scope choices down to either the vortex viper hs 4-16x50 or the lr version. I like the idea of having an easy to get to turret but I am also concerned about bumping it around if I carry the gun through the woods any amount. Which scope would be the better choice here?

I have used both. The main difference between the two is the LR has a lot more moa. It also has zero stop. I still have the LR. I just think the BDC is stupid and have never figured out why these are still a option on rifle scopes.

Well, if it doesn't say Leupold on it.....then it's not a Leupold. :)

Just got a Leupold mark ar 6x18 mil-dot today. Have not shot it but it is very clear and crisp. It comes with a 55 gr 223 turret so I will have to see how it works on the 243. If it is way off I may get the custom turrets from Leupold.

If it says Leupold on it doesn't necessarily mean its a bad thing.

I never said anything bad about leupold. I have used leupold products extensively during my military career. I am trying to find a good scope for under $500 though to outfit this rifle with.

I guess I may as well jump on the band wagon. The Mark ARs are very reasonably priced. I have two ( a 1.5-4x and a 3-9x) and have been very impressed. Of course they ride ARs but they are darn good optics and tough as nails.

I would also recommend one of these. I have a couple and have been very, very impressed and cant believe optics this good can come this inexpensively.. Super bright ad clear. The lenses will let you see way past most legal hunting hours. http://www.bigsupplyshop.com/Burris-...5_p_19035.html
A good wife and a steady job has ruined many a great hunter.

Price on mine at cabelas list was 550. They only had a display model left so I got 10% off, plus a spend $500 get 75$ off coupon, and $50 in club points. Paid $375.00 after discounts. But, also had to pay $50 in tax! They must have really raised the tax rate in that city for sure.

my dad has a sightron SII big sky 6-24 (about 550-600) and i was shocked at how good it is. i would seriously loo at the sightron before you get a vortex.

    Romad,

Sounds like the Vortex LR is the better option of the two for what you want to do.

I shoot long range with a Leupold Vari-X II 6-18X 40 AO Target and have been very pleased with it as a target scope. I think these are little over $500 now. I also have a Weaver T-36 that is good but not as much experience with.
