    .223 loads with IMR 4064 or 4007SSC

I have quite a bit of both powders, does anyone have a pet load with either powder? My barrel is a McGowen 1-9 twist

No one else has your barrel and chamber, so the loads aren't the same.
Do your own homework, and learn your Rifles preferences.

I was looking for a starting point, not a perfect load for my rifle. I have an abundance of both powders and was looking for a load that someone has had luck with.

Referencing a reloading manual with both the recommended starting load and max load will be a godsend. I also reference reloadersnest.com to see what are some different loads that people are using. Typically IMR 4064 is a medium burning powder that works well in 308/30-06 family of cartridges. I've used IMR 4064 in 223 but the results weren't acceptable to me. IMR 4198 is an excellent powder to use in 223 on the other hand.
They who would give up essential Liberty, to purchase a little temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety.

Both powders are too slow for a 223. Don't try to make something work just because you have it.

I have used 4064 for long range with 80gr Noslers, SMKs and AMAXs. 24 gr was very accurate and had adequate velocity for 800 yds. This was out of a WOA 26" 1/7 Krieger barreled AR.
Hard to get too much in the case.

I would not say that IMR 4064 is too slow for .223 loads. When Varget was scarce, I played around with it for my .223 loads.

Shooting a 52 gr Sierra Matchking, out of 1:9 22" barrel, I had luck around 25.5ish grains.

Obviously your rifle will be different, so work up accordingly.

My pet load for my AR and a 55 grain bullet is 25.8 grains of 4064. Shoots fantastic one hole groups at 100 yards.

Sounds like I'll have to work up some loads with the 4064. I have a couple of manuals that list it for 223, but was curious if anyone on here had tried it with any luck. I appreciate your input.

My starting load for 4064 was 23gr pushing a 65gr Sierra Gameking bullet. This was for an AR platform gun with a 1-9 twist. Accuracy was very good but the powder was difficult to meter out of my RCBS powder thrower.

IMR 4064 is very similar in burn rate to Varget which is a go to powder for many 223 shooters. Far from to slow in fact slightly faster than Varget .

Did you read that somewhere or have you tried it? I wonder where to draw the line sometimes.

I don't regurgitate anything I read, I believe you need to read between the lines, and believe very little of what I read. With that said yes I have tried it, and yes it is still too slow for a 223.

I read that many people have great success with Varget in many different calibers. I have never had any luck with it in .223, .260, 25-06, 30-06 or 270wsm. Go figure.

I have had the same experience with Varget also. Doesn't work in anything I own but I done some load development with some friends rifles and they love the stuff. I did a 204 Ruger with 40 grain vmaxs and 27 grains of Varget and that thing shoots in the low .2s. Also did a 260 Remington for the same friend that shoots just as good with a 120 Amax and 38 grains of Varget . My 223 260 243 and 308 absolutely hates the stuff but runs 4064 beautifully.

stomp442, that's exactly what makes this game fun for me. :)
