How to camo a stainless barrel...

This is my "How to camo a stainless steel barrel when you really like the way it looks but it glistens in the Florida sun thread"....
The lose ends are great for attaching some of the natural vegetation for blendage. (Blendage?... New word?)
Now, if one of y'all would come up with an idea to tone down the muzzle brake a bit, I'd be obliged.

The camo wrap is made of scrap pieces of burlap. Once again, when you have too much time on your hands....

The guy that was behind me is still picking pieces of Kudzu out of his ears....

Luckily it was only my brother in law & not somebody I like.

Gun kote has a product called K-Phos. It preps the metal then you can paint it with GK and bake or Duracoat and let it cure. No problems.

I'll look into it. I spent time on the Brownells site & saw what you're talking about. Problem is there's so many different types to choose from & I have no luck with barrel coating. I'll most likely get a 2nd brake to paint & keep one as stainless.

    Thanks for your input Stang.

Really?? Hoppes took off Rustoleum paint. I use Butche's on my guns and (I must admit the .17 Fireball doesn't get cleaned a bunch) the cammo doesn't fall off.

Dave, did you ever hear me say I knew anything about painting?

Really, the one time I touched up a barrel with spray paint I had to redo it after each cleaning. Hoppes would remove it & the process starts all over again. It only had a few chips near the muzzle end & was a bit unsightly.
I just got used to retouching it after each cleaning until I swapped it with something different.

Me & paint never got along real well.

If you have trouble coating stuff use the Prevail Duracoat kit. Kind of pricey but the works well.

Well....I hear ya on that one. I think the part that I skipped over is the metal prep. Before you spray on the Rustoelum all of the oil's have to be off of the barrel. The best "stuff" that I've used for that is Acetone. You can find Acetone at your local hardware usually by the quart. A quart will last you pretty much a lifetime.

Take a clean terrycloth rag, saturate in Acetone and wipe the steel down. Do this a few times and then wipe with a clean cloth. Now your barrel is prepped for painting. Tape the threads and the muzzle and breach opening to prevent paint from going in the bore.

You will find your co-existence with paint will be much better!!

Since you live in Florida you could kill a gator or one of those big "alien" snakes you got down there and use the whole thing as a ghillie suit......might stink a bit but that could be used for cover sent.

Just make sure they're dead before you crawl up inside the critter....

I have Duracoat on a lot of my guns and it does well. After several hundreds of rounds some of it is coming off of the muzzle brakes. But, overall very good. No issues if the metal is prepared. I have a burlap ghille suit I had made cheap while I was in Afghanistan that I use for bow hunting deer on the ground and it is amazing. About 80% of the deer will actually walk towards me to see what I am until the arrow whacks them.

Hunter specialties makes a sock that does a pretty good job. Just cut it out where you need access to operate.

Oh and it's a lefty and yes the bolt is there

Here's one of the other side. the brake is kinda rough on the tip :)

What's wrong with camo tape? I have a shotgun that it's been on over 20 years. Easy to remove too.

Will that stuff hang in there that well? I was reluctant to use it until I got out in the bush. I didn't want to waste it. What about heat from the barrel? How does it fare?
The camo pattern I got is a little "off" compared to the Woodland Camo on the stock but guess hogs don't care what color the rifle is.

Ya know, I really like that. It should provide excellent hiding ability if you ever shoot fish in seaweed laden lake or ocean.
How's about PM me with the procedure on that. List of materials, etc...
I like that look & here in the swamps of Florida, I'd be able to sneak up on a gator with that.

Or, should I just rip a sleeve off of my ghillie suit & wrap the barrel?

I'm not a big fan of the Adhesive style tape because it can hold condensation and moisture against the metal and do ugly things over time. The stretchy stuff is OK but a pain to remove and re use. The socks are just easier to use, remove and reuse between trips afield.
