Unless it's REALLY old, a current model barrel will work just fine. There is no difference between long action and short action barrel threads.
You realize that you have to swap the bolt head, the mag follower and will probably have to have the magazine well machined out to accommodate the longer and larger round, right? And I wouldn't call it "one in a million" more like one of a couple thousand. All the Savage centerfires from the late 80s and early 90s period are built on long actions. I have one myself in .243.
