    recoil lug

I've got a 243 coming in that is going to be converted to a 6.5 creedmoor, I am making the stock out of a blank and am almost done. The action will be both pillar and glass bedded so my question is, if I am glass bedding anyway, on a scale of one to ten how important is it to accuracy that I order a precision recoil lug also?

The precision recoil lug is to help insure that the barrel does not "cant" when the barrel, lug, and action come together.

When going to the expense and work of a re-barrel, why not? Can't be sure of the effectiveness, but for $40 makes sense IMO. Here's what I used-

Take a moment and mic the factory recoil lug. You will find as much as .010 out of parallel. When you are looking at 1 1/8th inch dimater with something 20+ inches long being aligned by it you start to understand why it makes no sense to go to all that work and not replace it. At a minimum i would take a small very fine hone and "lap" in the face of the action and nut using light presure and a smal figure 8 pattern. There is more proud metal on an action face than you can imagine. The optimum would be to let someone true the face to the bolt raceway. Nothing more.

    Alrighty then!!! lol

I have nothing against grabbing one, I did when I built my 300 win mag, I thought the lug was just there to assist the stock in taming recoil so all the force didn't go straight to the action screws, I had no idea that it helped with aligning the rifle itself.. Live and learn I guess. I figured if there wasn't a whole lot of recoil coming out of that particular round, I could just go ahead and forgo it and save myself some $$$ because it shouldn't need the reinforcement.

Now I know otherwise though and ordered one from tactical works that is .240 inches thick. Came in the mail today.
