Question Want to Rebarrel - What About the AccuStock?

Looking to rebarrel my M11 .243 sporter with a 26" varmint or med varmint barrel. Its 3 years old, has the AccuStock and the new style bolt release. Talked with Jim, at NSS, and he indicated I'd have problems getting the bigger barrel to fit, due to the AccuStock. I'd anticipated this, but, thought I'd read, on this forum; that its just a matter of inletting the stock to get the bigger barrel to fit. Anyone have experience with this? Or am I going to need another stock? Aluminum rail stocks, for short action Savages, are rather limited in choice and I don't like the B&C Tactical.

    Thanks

Widening the barrel channel is not a big deal the ABS plastic works easy.

The Choate, Boyds, Mcmillian, Whidden, Manners will all do the trick too.

Now, I also have two Cabelas exclusive Savage stainless fluted varmint rifles. Both have medium-heavy varmint barrels, AccuStock, and the new style bolt release. Anybody have an idea where - if I had to - I could purchase one of these AccuStocks? They obviously take a heavy barrel.......

To me the accustock is a throw away stock, it is a little stiffer than the older ones but it is still a cheap stock. If you are going to put together a nice rifle then put a nice stock on it. Like stated by missed there are a lot of good stocks out there

Well, I respectfully disagree. I have 5 Savages, all purchased new. Four of the five have AccuStocks. The one without, though it groups well, doesn't shoot quite as well as the other four. Secondly, there are a lot of stock choices out there. However, there are not a lot of choices when it comes to aftermarket stocks which 1) will fit a short action Savage AND 2) have the aluminum bedding rails. If B&C made the Medalist, to fit a short action Savage; I wouldn't be posting.......
Thirdly, if I am absolutely forced to, because the existing stock just won't work with the fatter barrel, I'll put a conventional, laminated thumbhole stock on it.
All I'm doing is asking A) has anyone had this same issue and what's involved in inletting the stock or B) can I get a new AccuStock or equalivent somewhere ('cause I haven't been able to find any).

I shot a Stevens 200 with a shaw 7mm08 barrel on it that outshot any rifle I have ever fired before at 100 and 200 yards including some expensive fclass rigs. It had a factory stevens stock that had been bedded and some time spent on the trigger. Talk about throw away...

The accustock may not impress your friends but it will kill your quarry.

Here is my accustock 111 in 25-06 with a 26" varmint barrel. I really opened it up by cutting material away with a trim saw. Kind of caveman but it works and gives a different look to the rifle.

You may or may not like Hogue but they make stocks to fit the short action that can be had with full length bedding block. If you decide you need to replace the stock it would be worth looking in to. I have one for my long action and it's great. They are also made for varmint contour barrels too.
