    Questions about savage 116se, 375hh

I have a few questions concerning this model such as...

    1. What years was this model made?
    2. How did it perform in the field, were there any problems with this model?
    3. Why was it discontinued?

    Thank's.

I've seen the 116 375 H&H in the Alaskan Guide model. The big complaints on that were the flimsy tupperware stock, the heavy recoil from the gun being so light becuase of the cheap tupperware stock and the lack of controlled round feed. I guess I can understand why CRF would be wanted in a dangerous game rifle. I've never seen the Safari Express rifle but I believe it came in a wood stock. Slow sales would be my guess for discontinuing this gun.

The Model 116SE "Safari Express" model was first introduced in 1994. It featured a stainless steel barreled action with a 24" barrel, had an overall length of 45-1/2 inches and weighted 8-1/2 pounds. The barrel featured a three-leaf Express rear sight and Savage's proprietary on/off adjustable muzzle brake. The stock was a select grade American walnut piece with an ebony tip, custom checkering, two stainless steel cross bolts and a high gloss finish.

The 116SE was originally offered in .300 Win Mag, .338 Win Mag and .458 Win Mag. For 1995 Savage added the .425 Express to the list of chambers, but interest was meager at best and it was discontinued the same year. In 2000 Savage added the .375 H&H chamber option to the 116SE. 2001 was the last year the .338 Win Mag chamber option was offered, with the .300 Win Mag and .375 H&H being discontinued at the end of the 2002 model year. This left the .458 Win Mag as the only option listed for the 116SE in the 2003 and 2004 catalogs, and in the fall of 2004 the Model 116SE itself was discontinued.

As for why it was discontinued, that would be due to lack of sales to justify it's continued existence. After 2004 you could still order one through the custom shop, but they weren't a cataloged or regular production gun.
