    17 hornet

hey i figured i would ask those who knew. what would need to be done to a stevens 200 in 223 in order to convert it to 17 hornet? i know the barrel would need changed but what about the bolt face , can that even be done, going from 223 to 17 hornet? the reason i ask is i car about the way a gun looks almost as much as i care how it shoots, and i really do not like the way the model 25 ( i think that is what it was) looks as far as the action. stock and everything else looked good but that action looked funny to me, like it was an oversized rimfire action. any info would be great. thanks

but it has to. i got to reading about the trouble with the mod 25 and something needs to be done. i think i really want a 17 hornet and the mod 25 is not cutting the mustard on looks or function. thanks.

nevermind i think i could just go with the 17 remington instead. it is much faster and since it is the 223 knecked down should be easier for me to get what i want. anyhow thanks for the comments.

Now you're on the right track. You'll only need a barrel.

Also look into the 17 Fireball. Supposed to foul less and retain accuracy longer than the 17 Remington and works fine as a single shot on the Stevens 200/Savage 110 platforms.

Just something else to think about. Either 17 FB or 17 Rem are better than the 17 hornet for the 200/110 platforms.

Looks like www.apachegunworks.com lists the 17 Fireball as an available chambering. Jim at Apache Gun Works built my 6-WSM and did a great job. Very accurate shooting barrel.

I would also contact Devin at www.sin-arms.com and see what he can do. He has done some machine work for me in the past and it was good work also.

Shilen Barrels offers several chambers in .17 cal. www.shilen.com. Call Jim Briggs at NSS and see what he can get for a Shilen. He stocks and ordered Prefits from Shilen and is another great guy to deal with.

Devin at sin-arms did a .17 Fireball barrel for me....I think it was two years ago. It's a shooter for sure!! Here is a target. The target on the left is my new Model 25 in .17 Hornet. You can see that I was walking in the scope and once I had it "almost there" the group clustered very good but just to the left of center. (That's since been fixed) On the same day I shot my .17 Fireball for comparison so the target on the right is the Fireball target. Both are at 100 yards. The Fireball "Flyer" is my fault. BTW....I think the Fireball group is a 9 or 10 shot group. None of that 3 shot stuff here!!! And I do have my Fireball set to be 1" high at 100yds. (Yes....it's true....I'm not perfect!!!) FWIW...Dave

If you are stuck on a 17 hornet I would start with a CZ, if you just want a 17 something go fireball or 17 remington ( I'd suggest fireball if you don't care about a repeater)

well i really do want a repeater. i just do not like the single shot types of rifles. been there done that was never completly happy.does the 17 remington feed well? what is the deal with the fireball and feeding? which of the 2 is cheapest to reload?

The short case makes it difficult. You can make a nice repeater in the fireball and hornet in a CZ 527. The 527 is a pretty cute mini mauser action. The 17 remington feeds well in a Savage but I have never been much of a fan of it. Everyone I have had/shot liked to carbon foul very quickly.
