How to correctly mount a scope

Hey guys I was just putting my old Tasco Big Horn 4.5x18x50 on my Savage Model 11, and like always I had to just eyeball the crosshairs to make sure that they're plumb and horizontal. I just wanted to know is there any surefire way to make sure that they are set right? Thanks

Place feeler gauges or playing cards between your base and scope if using a one piece base and the turret housing is flat on the bottom. It will self align itself when you tighten the ring caps. This will put the scope and base in parallel planes. Hopefully your reticle and base are square to the scope and gun receiver.

Thanks but the only bases that I use are two piece, any advice for those?
