110E bolt?

One of the guys at work just got a hold of his wife's grandfathers 110E chambered in '06, it's in fair to good shape, some rust on the barrel and action, mostly near the muzzle, about where you'd hold onto it while on stand or in the pickup?
The problem is that the complete bolt is GONE!, the grandfather passed about 10 years ago, the rifles are here now because the mother in law was involved in a serious accident about a week ago, she's in a long term care facility and may never go home?, so questions about the guns may never get answered??

The question is we tried to see if the bolt in my 110GXP 270 would fit, not exactly?, there seems to be a rib on the front bolt shroud of the newer bolt that there is no provision for on the older receiver?, if we get a new bolt and modify the forward shroud is that all that may be required to make the rifle functional again??, or do we need to search out an earlier bolt setup??
I'm not worried about head space, we have access to the gauges and I have the barrel nut nut wrench, just wondering about the complete bolt assembly?

If it were a Marlin lever gun I'd be posting pics of the targets by now!, but my knowledge of the Savage is somewhat limited!, my conversion of an 11 to a 12 went without a hitch!

Post some photos of the receiver that show what the bolt area looks like. That may help.

All but the earliest generation Savage 110s use the same bolt assembly. A complete bolt can be had online for about $100. However, after installing a new bolt the headspace must be checked. Luckily the Savage system allows the headspace to be adjusted easily by loosening the barrel nut and tightening on a go gage.

Pardon if Im wrong but you may have to order a new bolt and a old bolt face. You can get a gunsmith to order the old part if Savage wont sell directly to you.

If his rifle is of the very early generation that requires the "Remington Like" bolt head (pre-1966), then Savage will be a no-go as to the best of my knowledge, they do not sell parts for or service models prior to 1995 (may be a year or two off on that) when the current owners took over. If that is the case and that is the style the OP has, then a new style barrel and new style bolt would be needed.

OP, if you can post some detailed pictures as thomae suggested, I am sure we can help you out in identifying what needs to be done.

Looking at them side by side the only difference I see is the tab on the side of the front bolt shroud on the later guns, both of my 110's and my 12 have the tab?

the bolt head enters the action then that tab stops it as there is no provision for it?, eyeballing both actions it looks as if the tab was removed the late bolt would work in the earlier receiver?
The cost of a NEW bolt is not an issue, if we're sure it can be made to work?

As for the "bolt shroud" also called the "front baffle", you should be able to grind off the tab to make that work. My concern is the bolt head itself. The pre-66 110's used a different bolt head and the current style head won't work with out changing to a newer style barrel.

Looking at the outside of the barrel, is there a bulge in the contour of the barrel about mid-forearm? That is a dead give-a-way that its the older style.

IIRC there is a rim of sorts around the chamber on the rear face of the barrel on the older models, the current style is faced off smooth.

Worst case scenario just to be safe, you pick up a new bolt and a take-off barrel from the classifieds here for $40-$60 and boom, you're good to go.

I stopped at the LGS on the way home tonight, the manager pulled our a catalog (can't remember who's now??) and opened it up to the Savage 110E, the exploded view looked different than any of mine?, he said it looked like the Remington bolts, SO!?
There is no bulge in the barrel?, the contour looks just like both of mine in '06 and 270, and looking in the action at the rear face of the barrel it looks to be flat.
