mod. 12 caliber conversion

What is involved with a conversion from a 22-250 to 223.
I know the bolt face and barrel and barrel nut. Anything else? Is this something only a 'smith can do?
Is it possible to get a .223 barrel from Savage at a reasonable cost? And where do I get other parts?

Barrel nut is the same.

Bolt head, barrel, and magazine are different.

You can do this yourself with a 223 barrel, .378 bolt head, 223 magazine, barrel nut wrench, dead blow hammer, sturdy shop vise, notched hardwood blocks, brown sugar, appropriate GO GAUGE and Scotch brand clear tape. Might wanna spring for a new ground recoil lug at that point, too.

There are videos on Youtube that show you how easy it is, and after you do it the first time, should take you 15 minutes TOPS to do it thereafter.

Jim Briggs at NSS can fix you up with everything you need, but you can get barrels from a number of different places and gun parts (bolt head, magazine, etc) from places like Midway & Brownells.

Savage won't sell you just a barrel, they will see you a new gun though.

Yes.

Cuz I had brown sugar in the cabinet, and would have needed to go buy rosin.

I'm with everything said minus the go gauge. I never use them and have never had an issue. Can probally find the barrel and bolt head both from midwayusa. I just did my 7-08 that way. No brown sugar though lol

I've done the headspace both ways - with a factory cartridge, and with the proper go/no-go gauges. I rented the gauges from Reamer rentals. Using the gauges is not very spendy, and provides a level of comfort/security/feel good/safety that is worth the small cost - to me.
