Hey guys, I'm 18 and looking for a nice hunting rifle to start out on. Being that I'm 18 however, I am on a tight budget. I went to a store today and they had what they said was a used Savage model 11 7mm with a Bushnell 3-9 x 40mm scope on it for $370. The problem is that I cannot find any reviews on this particular rifle. The one I looked at did NOT have a detachable box magazine or a Accutrigger. It had a tang safety, 22" barrel, and what seemed like a 70ish degree bolt. From what I've seen online, this gun does not exist. It had a synthetic stock and mounts for a sling. Can anyone figure out what rifle this is, and whether or not it's a good deal? I plan on hunting hogs and maybe the occasional deer, so I think 7mm would be fine. Any advice is greatly appreciated, and if you need to know more information, please ask away and I'll try my best to answer. The last thing is what should I look at to make sure that this rifle is in good condition. Thanks again guys

Saw two new Stevens 200's in 7MM Magnum at the trading post last week....they were $400. I would stay away from the one you are looking at.
All Model 10/11/12/14/16/110/111/112/114/116 Savages and the Stevens 200 (and the Savage Axis for that matter) have 90-degree bolts and always have.
The Model 11/111's have been the basic Hunter Models for decades, and it was just this year that Savage significantly scaled back the "base" models and eliminated most of the Model 11/111's from the menu that weren't package rifles. They're all basically the same though as they haven't changed much over the years.
For the money they're asking for that I'd hold off and wait for a better deal. Used pre-Accutrigger models can usually be had for $300 or less. Might also want to look at the Savage Axis which is right around $300 brand new.

If you can get it under $300 the older rifles with the flat back actions are great budget deer slayers and capable of some darn fine accuracy as well. I far prefer em to the new Axis rifles but that's just me. I guess because they are the Savages I cut my teeth on and are simple, familiar, good quality and easy to improve. I wouldn't put much faith and even less money in one of the older package gun scopes and mounts though.
Maybe try to haggle em down or just save and be patient, as long as you have cash there's always a deal to be found.

Yea they are. Anything Magnum is a hoss. You might better work up to a Magnum rather than start there. Recoil ,may be a hindrance to your shooting mechanics early on and possibly even cause you to avoid shooting it as much as you'd like and need..Originally Posted by big honkin jeep

You might have run across a Savage 11/111 made exclusively for Cabelas or Dicks Sporting Goods. Which would be why you aren't finding any information on Savage for the gun.
Being that it is used I too would hold off and look harder for a new package deal in the low 400 range.

For reference the first rifle I ever bought was a Savage 110 with a Bushnell scope. It was used at a gun shop and I paid $265. Caliber was 30.06. I actually gave that rifle to my Dad for Father's Day 2 years ago. It was spot on accurate and took down good deer.

I have a .270 stainless 116 in a factory add on stock to make it a much sturdier rifle.It only has 11 rounds through it and is a new old stock rifle without a scratch.It is on this forum for sale.
