    What Twist?

I am going to be picking up a LRPV single shot in a .223 by mid summer and was wondering what twist I should go with? I am just starting out and was wondering if the 1in 9 or the 1 in 7 would be a better option? This is simply going to be a target gun for shooting paper. Where I am just starting out I wont be shooting huge distances for a while but would like to donw the road. How far out can a person go with accuracy with the 1in9 and what kind of weight bullet will the 1 in9 handle?

    What would you suggest?

    Thanks

I would go with the 1 in 9 twist, Most people shoot the 68/69 gr bullets in them and do wonderful out to 600 yards. I have found that a 1 in 9 twist will stabilize some 77 gr bullets, and shot well with them. IMO the 223 rem just don't have enough gusto to effectively use the 1 in 7 twist. (I am sure there are others that are willing to argue this point.)

I've had very good results with the 75 grain A-Max in my 1 in 9 twist at 600 yards.

I would recommend the 1-7, or if you are going to get a custom barrel anyway, go with the 1-7.7 or 1.8. The .223 definitely has the "gusto" to make the 80grn AMAX's, SMK's or Berger VLD's to fly out with very similar ballistics to the 155grn .308. You will still have no problems with shooting anything in the 69grn range and tehn you still have the choice of running the 80+. There has been more and more testing of the 90grn Berger VLD and some have very promising results and others are so so. If you could get a 90grn VLD to work in a 1-7 or 1-6.5 .223, you would have a combination that rivals all .308, most 6mm and starting to knock on the door of some 6.5mm. The BC for the Berger 90VLD is .551, the 115grn 6mm is only .545, and although the 210grn 30cal is .631 out of a .308 you will NOT get near enough velocity for it to matter.
