    260 build question

Can you take a 260 barrel and put it on a long action with a detachable magazine (originally a 30-06), use the original magazine, and have it feed and function reliably?

    Thx.

The long action could be a plus, as it would allow you to seat those nice high-BC 140 grain bullets out to longer than a 2.8 COL if the throat is long enough to need it.

Long action is a definate plus. I built my 260 with an LA and have no regrets.

    Re: 260 build question

Aside from being able to seat 140's or other long bullets out farther, what are the advantages of a long action with a short action length cartridge? Off the top of my head the only thing I can think of is the ability to switch to either long or short action cartridges in the future, but what else does it offer? I am admittedly unfamiliar with Savage actions, my only current bolt gun is a Remmy 700P, but I'm looking to build (or have built)a Savage in .260 in the near future.

OK so are you guys saying that if I have a LA I can use 22-250, 243, 308 shells in the magazine (with appropriate barrels of course) and it will feed normally?

22-250 probably wouldn't feed right, I believe they have a different magazine follower than the other cartridges. Any of the others should be fine.

I have .260 barrel on the way....

Will probably go with the long action, plus the bolt face is the same (vs. starting with a .223).

    Re: 260 build question

With the abundance of premium polymer tipped bullets on the market, using the long action should not pose a problem. One thing I encountered is the flattening of the noses of spitzer and spire point bullets when working with this action/caliber configuration. The slightly longer than needed magazine allows the bullets to get a lot more of a running start under recoil before coming to an abrupt halt when they slam into the front of the magazine box, thus flattening them. The effect on the target would ultimately be close to nil but they just don't look as pretty. lol
