    Savage extractor detent ball

Being a Savage noob I managed to loose the detent ball tonight when I knocked the extractor off while cleaning my bolt. Will the proper sized SS ball bearing work in it's place? Does anyone know of it's dimensions? I'd like to try and pick one up to get this thing back together for a coyote hunt this weekend.

    Thanks.

The factory size is .125". Many have replaced with a .140" for better extraction.

Chances are,if you had good extraction with the factory detent ball,it will still work.I had extractor pdoblems with three different extractors and a new bolt head.Another new extractor fixed the problem, but I did put a .140 detent ball in from SSS,just to be sure.

Does anyone have a source for info covering working on Savage rifles such as the repairs on this thread.

    Re: Savage extractor detent ball

    Hi all,
I have a number of Savage bolt rifles 112, 12...all BVSS, various calibers. I've been using them a long time and shoot often. I finally broke one! The extractor chipped on the model 12 .223. When I took it apart I lost the ball (of course). I had .125 chromed balls in my toolbox. I got the new extractor form Midway. The new extractor is not identical to the old one. The old one was longer, engages the groove more. This is the same on all of my rifles. The new one works fine though. I read this post a while ago and also ordered 9/64" balls from McMaster Carr. I put the bigger ball in and it just made everything feel better (like new). I think I'm going to do springs, balls and extractors for the whole lot before spring happens here.

    Thanks to all who contribute.

To my surprise,ACE hardware does have individual steel ballbearings, however not the proper size.I tried the 5/32 ,which was too big to enter the spring hole.It would take a 9/64" which is .140.I ordered a half dozen from SSS.Most of the problem is not having a well machined extractor. The last two Savage sent me were noticeably better machined than the three previous ones I used.

In a pinch I used a #4 steel shot. Never had need to redo it.

Try a bicycle shop, if not there Enco has them in 3.5mm, 100 for about $5.

Some of the "BIG" hardware stores have steel balls but never the size you need.
Make a special trip to the bicycle shop. Take a pen magnet with you. Stick in the drawer of 1000+ and pull out as many as you need. Bring a small plastic bag to pack them in. 20 pieces cost me a buck!

    Re: Savage extractor detent ball

Rego, the steel shot has saved my butt a few times. Had a pierced primer at the range and extractor popped out and lost the ball. Luckily enough I still had a couple stray steel duck loads in the truck and cut one open and used a piece of steel shot, that was two years ago and still is working great. I believe it was #4 also.
