    Thumbs Up Alaskan brush hunter

I see the Alaskan brush hunter offered on the savage site. My question - what other chamberings do you think I could do on this action? Barrel choices?

Id love to do a short barrel 458 or 45/70 bolt gun would be cool!

You can do any chambering that fits in any of the 11X series rifles. If you get the bolt face extractor ejector to work, Voila!
    There are a few exceptions.

I sent two emails out to a couple of savage specialists - but have to heard if this project is even possible.

It's a long action with a magnum bolt face so you could put a 458 in it just by changing the barrel. 45/70 wouldn't work because it's a rimmed cartridge, but a 450 Marlin would work if you don't want the 458 Win Mag. Check the barrel shank diameter before you order a barrel for the Alaskan, they are not listed as being a large shank model but I measured one less than a week ago that was a large shank and it was chambered for 375 Ruger. I am in the process of putting a 450 Marlin in a 10 FCP-SR and I spent about 5 hours in a gun store last weekend with a pair of calipers measuring just about every variation of components to see what fits what. I started the build on a long action Stevens 200, and it worked great, it just didn't occur to me that the 450 Marlin would fit in a short action at the time. Once I remembered the length of the cartridge, I decided I would rather use a short action. The fly in the ointment was that I already had the barrel and it is a small shank. All of the factory short action magnums use large shank barrels, so I had to get a standard short action and I will have to change the bolt head to a short mag push feed. I'm waiting on the bolt head and firing pin, I'll let you know if there are any other parts needed once I get it running. I went with the 10 FCP-SR because it was set up exactly the way I wanted it and I'll have a really nice 308 barrel for a spare. I started this project to replace a custom Siamese Mauser in 45/70 that was stolen. Thankfully the Mauser was recovered, but not until I had started on its replacement.
