    Stevens trigger

Every thread I've looked at shows a sear screw on the Savage trigger. Is this something that doesn't come on the Stevens ? Tonight I got LOOKING at my Stevens trigger, the reason IMO it was too light. The former owner had a smith do the trigger. There were times the bolt would not cock and the safety would not operate smoothly with the bolt cocked. Also there was a lot of travel after the trigger had been fired. From what I can tell the spring has been changed to .040. It seems to me it was set as low as it could go without slam firing " I adjusted to get it to do this ". I started turning screw's according to the thread's I've read here. I have the trigger to my liking now. The question how is the best way to test this rifle to make SURE it will not fire unless the trigger is pulled by the shooter ??

With the rifle cocked, engage and disengage the safety a number of times to be sure it will not release the sear. Again with the rifle cocked, rap the butt on the ground to see if you can dislodge the sear.

I normally raise the butt to about knee level then basically drop it while maintaining control of it by the barrel. I might even give it an extra bit of force just to make sure after a few knee high drop tests. On my rifles, the safety will engage during the drop test. You need to make sure the safety operates without binding for this to happen. My safeties are tight but still loose enough to move to the rear, putting the rifle on safe, during the drop test.
