    338 Ultra Mag

Will a 338 Ultra Mag fit on a standard small shank action safely?

    Thanks

I have seen small shank 338 edge rifles.

It will. Savage even made ultra mags on the small shank initially before switching to the large shank. It doesn't cost much to have a gunsmith open up the receiver ring to the large shank size though if you've thought about that. The thin chamber walls on the small shank make me uneasy but that's just personal preference. I've not heard of any problems with them.

I have never had any problems with it and I have done over 100 barrels with that cartridge and similar sized ones.

When you figure in the action you have the same amount of steel.

True but not for that portion that sticks out of the front of the receiver. That's the part that makes me uneasy. Like I said though, never heard of any problems with them. Now a Lapua size case on the small shank is another story.

If it were my face on the stock when things went "Bang" I'd much rather have a 338-06 making the noise. I know it's been done but that's a lot of cartridge in a small shank.
