    savage 10fp issue

hey guys. i have a sav 10fp and i just put a stockade stock on it. the rifle shoots great but once i get a round in its hard to rotate the bolt open and closed. like really hard. its rotates just fine empty. any suggestions? this makes follow up shots very difficult bc i cant rechamber a round very fast at all and it takes alot of force.

Loosen the forward action screw & try it.
If it's looser, shorten the action screw.

NVM. i got it. that was the issue. can you ttell me why that was causing it? i like learning this stuff.

would u mind being a bit more specific plz? are you referring to the sxcrew on the bottom or the screw on the back of the bolt by the knob?

also, it fuynctions fine without rounds. once i try to load it, it gets super toght when i try to turn the knob to close or open the bolt

Because you say it functions fine without a round in it, I would say check the rounds for OAL.It sounds to me like they are too long for the chamber.
They are the front action screw and the rear scope base screw Frank is reffering to, not the BAS.

If it's OK without any ammo, that's a slightly different scenario.

Try different ammo. Froggy's hot on the trail. Check OAL of the cartridges.

I need to be a bit more thorough with reading & stop the "skim reading"....

Seems a bit odd that it would act differently without a round in the chamber.....

Oh well... As long as you have it figured out.

Frank. With a round in the chamber the bolt head is held close to the centerline. Without a round the bolt head has room to move. Sounds like it is just a few thousandths too long.

I wasn't as lucky with mine. The action screw was long enough to stop the bolt dead in it's tracks. With or without a round.

    Glad your mystery is solved.

I see an ammo issue. Reloads that weren't properly sized will fit too tight.

He stated that he removed some off the end of the screw and now all is well.

Very Common, every time I change a stock, I always check the action screws to make sure they are not sticking through the action interfering with the bolt. I have shortened some, and had to get longer action screws in some cases.

Very easy to check, same issue with the front scope rail screws. The will actually jam into the barrel threads. If you have a barrel nut that is hard to get off, remove the front scope rail screws then try. The scope rail screws are soft, but you will still damage the barrel threads if there hitting the threads.

Brownells sells a screw checker that will assist you in shorting the screws, part # 080-670-001. They also have a metric one.

I was just going to mention the front screw rail..nice catch. Cool Brownells part as well. I've been carrying in standard sized screws in Home Depot to use theirs to check threading, etc.
