    Model 11 Extractor Question

A friend has a model 11 chambered in 308. A couple of days ago he was shooting some Federal Fusion 150 grain ammo and a case got stuck in the chamber. When he pulled the bolt back the case stayed in the chamber. When he checked the situation out he found that the extractor had came loose and that ball had somehow got from under the extractor. How could this happen?

    Regards, Keith

I'm not sure how it happened.

The extractor would have had to move inward or outward quite a bit to release the ball. When chambering a round the extractor only moves outward enough to jump the case rim then returns to engage the extractor groove but the ball doesn't ever clear the extractor detent. It almost had to escape captivity prior to chambering the round.

In any event if he needs a replacement check any local hardware stores, bike shops and etc for a .140" (9/64") ball bearing to replace the factory .125".

If the case was stuck, he probably blowed a primer, which in turn would blow the extractor off the ball.

I had this happen. I wiggled the bolt handle as it was stiff to open and it finally opened, the only thing I could imagine is that the extractor blew outward some but not all the way, releasing the ball and then fell back inward to be removed with the bolt as I pulled it rearward.

I don't think that the primer was blown. At least he didn't say anything about it.
