    .338 barrel source

I'm a life long shooter (got my first shotgun MANY years ago when I was 4...a Stevens 94!) but recently picked up my first Savage rifle and now I'm hooked. I traded for a Savage 270 which is a nice rifle but I already have a great shooting 270 so I'm thinking it's time for my first Savage barrel swap. I've got several rifles in the .308 and under category so I've been thinking a .338 would be nice, preferably a .338-06 but a .338 Federal would be a close second choice. Funds are pretty tight but I don't need match grade accuracy (I don't think I've ever taken a shot over 200 yards unless you count coyote) so I was thinking about getting a barrel from Midway or Brownells but both are out of stock. Do any of you guys have suggestions for where I might find a reasonably priced .338-06 without having to wait weeks (or months)?

    Thanks!

Welcome to our home away from home. Both calibers you mention are highly sought after everywhere. Maybe someone reading this will have one they would part with.

Typically one kind find a 338 Win Mag takeoff barrel from time to time. I have picked up a couple the past year from the classifieds.

Wash it in really hot water, then dry it on high. That should make it pretty close to a 338.

Just a heads up...Midway got both the 338-06 and 338 Federal barrels in stock around noon today. I've already got mine ordered :) Thanks!

Anybody know if those barrels are Hammer forged or buttoned?

From what I've been able to find the Midway A&B barrels are most likely made by ER Shaw and are button rifled.
