    7mm Magnum bolt face question

I have a 7mm mag barrel that I would like to use on my Edge action this year for dear and am wondering if the WSM bolt head would be the correct one to use. I know that it is a control round feed and that is where my question comes in. The bolt face I am referring to came off of a stagger fed set up.

Here is a link to a thread in which Fred (sharpshooter) of Sharp Shooter supply states that the Axis/Edge rifles use the Short action style bolt heads. So a WSM bolt head would be for a short action, so that should be what you need, but if you are using a CRF type head, the round will extract but not eject as the CRF heads utilize a standing type ejector.

Here is a link to the FAQ thread showing the different bolt heads.

Thanks much for the info. So what bolt head would i need? A standard bolt head machined to fit a belted magnum?

You could use a LA bolt head thats been machined to fit a SA/Axis/Edge. I know that the factory push feed WSM heads are supposed to be thinker (from face of lugs to rear of lugs) and I don't know it what would cause you some issues with picking up rounds from the magazine due to the Axis already using a notched front baffle to lengthen bolt travel, but that would be an option to explore.

Next question is, will your Axis mag hold and feed the 7mm RM?

I will have to get the proper magazine and Cheaper than Dirt has them for the long action rounds. I really do appreciate your help on this. Looks like if i do this my machinist will make a little dough..

I am not fluent on the Axis Mags, since I see that there is no factory Axis in 7RM or any other mag, I guess I am just wondering if it will feed a belted mag or not. Or maybe with some modification?

Glad to help when I can.

Looks like they do make a mag for it. Looks like it uses the standard mag body from a CF LA 110/111 series based off the pic. If thats the case, then you could put a regular CF/LA Magnum body and follower on the Axis base plate you have already? I guess it depends on which one you find first.

Good catch on the mag. I would have guessed based off the Savage website that it would have been more difficult than that.

Like I said above, I am not fluent in the Axis/Edge magazines, so I guess we both learned some things in this thread.

A lil' knowledge goes a long way.
