    Questions on Savage 110 .270

I picked up an "old" (to me anyway) Savage 110 in .270 for $100. It needs some work and I have several questions. A few pics are attached for reference. I've never owned a Savage, nor do I know much about them. Any Advice is appreciated!

    1. Is there an easy way to get the age of the rifle? The Serial# on the action is 8691, Serial# on the bolt is 15645.

    2. I need a stock and I noticed the barrel is "swollen" around where the flip-up rear sight attaches. Most of the stocks I've found online don't appear to have the the barrel channel inlet for the swollen area. If a stock is labeled as an "early model" should it fit this rifle?

    3. It is missing the magazine spring and follower. I've found a replacement, but I've discovered that some of these rifles are "staggered feed" while others are "center feed". Is there an easy way to tell which one I have? I'm assuming it's a staggered feed, which I imagine is more common.

    4. There are two screws on the bottom of the safety mechanism that appear to be adjustable and one on the front of the trigger. Any suggestions on what these do?

Thanks in advance for the help, as I know very little about this one.

I had to "right-click" the images and open in another tab.
Wow, that is an old one! The swollen area is machined to allow attachment of the rear sight. Like I said, this is an old one.
If you are reasonably handy with hand tools, you can purchase a stock and relieve it (inlet it) to accommodate the rear sight area. How is the rifle bore? If it isn't all that great, perhaps now is the time to swap out barrels. That will solve the abnormal contour of your barrel problem. The trigger adjustment screws control pull, creep and overtravel. There is an 8 page write up on this forum describing the adjustment; however, you have a lot of work to do before adjusting your trigger!
Hopefully, more knowledgeable members will click to view your photos and, thus, be able to offer better advice.

If you have the swollen barrel then you have a 1958-1965 style 110. Those use a different style bolt head that fits into a recess in the barrel (kind of like a remington style setup). IIRC these can be updated to use the newer style barrels and boltheads, but don't quote me on it. I have not personally had a chance to disassemble one of these real early 110's. This will be a staggerfeed style setup. The newest style rifles use the centerfeed magazines so this is definatly not that.

Here is a link to the FAQ article that shows how to adjust the trigger.

Thanks for the advice so far. I finally figured out how to get the pics to show up!

The barrel doesn't look too bad to me, I'd like to keep it on anyway since it is somewhat unique. To be honest, I'll probably just clean it up, shoot it a little, then sell it.
