    Mark II TRR-SR Expectation

When I purchased my TRR-SR 22lr, the people at the gun shop were talking about hitting an aspirin at 100 yards with theirs. Of course they have around $2,000 dollar scopes and shooting $35 a box ammo. I am shooting Walmart ammo and have a Mueller 4.5-14x40 AO scope. At 30 yards I can keep a dime pattern most of the time. With the Walmart ammo I have alot of flyers. Should I be getting a better pattern with what I have or am I going to have to try some different ammo. I have tried some Federal bulk from the gun shop but they seem to all have quite a few flyers. Thanks.

I have a mark II TR. I have the exact same scope and I shot a 2, 5 shot groups today at 100 yrds that we're both less than .75 inches with the best 3 out of the 5 shots being only .36 inches. This was with Eley team match ammo. With Walmart Winchester bulk the best group I've gotten was 1.6 inches. Most are around 2 inches I've tried numerous brands and found the best groups with the Eley. The only bulk ammo that I can get to shoot under an inch and a half is the CCI AR Tactical. I can some times get just under an inch with it but it is rare. You might get lucky and find a cheap bulk ammo that shoots well in your gun but from my past experience if you want the accuracy the gun is capable of you'll have to spring for some match grade ammo.

Thanks Robbieg19, I might try a box of the good stuff to see what it can do. I also am from TN. Ever heard of Cookeville?

Yes, I know where Cookville is. I'm not too far away in Smyrna (just southeast of Nashville). I would try the Eley or Lapua. I've never heard anyone say these brands didn't shoot good. I've also heard the the Wolf Match ammo is good and less expensive but haven't tried it yet.

But how many shots did it take them to hit said asprin? I generally find the guys who stand around in gun shops making such claims are usually full of...well, you know.

I agree, but apparently the owner and the sales person are on the competitive side. They shoot in alot of competitions. He showed me the shells they shoot, I cant remember the name but they were $35 a box for 50. I might try some match shells just to see how small a pattern I can shoot but not $35 a box. But as you said, as far as how many he can hit in a row is another story.

I shoot in a lot of competitions and with some very good shooters and will tell you that is a very bold claim. I think they are trying to sell you a $2000 scope and $35/box ammo. If they can pull of shots like that they don't need to be wasting time in a gun store.

I have thought about that myself, thats why I asked what should be reasonable expectations on a 22lr. No way I would invest that amount in a 22lr.

Yeah. That's what a good 1000y yard target rifle and scope would cost to build.

Greetings. I'm also from the Nashville area. With a TRR-SR and "good ammo" (Eley, Wolf, Lapua) the rifle is capable of sub MOA at 100 yards on a good day. Wind of course will be an issue. My son and I often shoot ours out past 300 yards. They are very accurate rifles. I use a $90 Tasco 6-24X and it's been fine on this rifle.

Tempest, you and Robbieg19 will have to look me up some day when youre close by and give me some pointers. Ill try to find some match ammo to try but doubt Ill have any luck. 22 ammo is impossible to find around here, (unless youre willing to spend $35 a box). I appreciate all the comments and advice.

Would like to meet up sometime. I don't when I would be able to get to Cookville, but if you are ever going to be near Manchester there is a range there that you can shoot out to 300 yrds. As far as giving tips I'm not a great teacher but I would be glad to help if I can. I can say what helped me most was learning to control my breathing and trigger control. Look up Champions Choice I think the website is champchoice.com. They are in Lavergne, TN and I have bought most of my match ammo from them recently. Might be too far to drive but shipping shouldn't bee too high to Cookville. Prices are reasonable.

Try Eley Tenex, Match or even Team.

They were likely talking about other people. My sister competes at a national/international level in 50 meter Benchrest (and locally in Long Range Rimfire), and yes, they can "hit aspirin" regularly. Ties are broken by the number of 10-X's, as a bunch of folks will have a "perfect" 750 score. Their scopes are 60x power, their rifles cost more than my car, and their rests cost $1000+, easily. They go through expensive batched ammo like crazy. She and the team don't spend time leaning on gun store counters shooting the breeze. They're usually just... shooting.

I'm with you, I have a Savage Mark II, and my scope is a few weeks' worth of fancy coffee at Starbucks. LOL! I'd like to upgrade to a Mueller APT or Sightron SIII scope. I guess folks like us "save up for better gear" on a whole different level. :)

Noknot try some CCI SV, most Savage rifles I've seen shoot it very well. I've tried two kinds of Eley, one was $25 a box and the other was $10. The $25 stuff only shot marginally better than SV and the cheaper shot like the cheap bulk stuff. My rifle is a MKII BTVLSS with a Mueller APT 4.5-14 scope.

I also recommend checking on an Apachee trigger kit, great upgrade IMO.

    50 yards.

Nice. Been awhile since weather has allowed me to get out and shoot. I have tried different ammo and the Fiocchi, Aguila SuperExtra, and Wolf all seem to give me basically the same results. I am amazed at the difference in some ammo. I purchased a brick of the Aguila Supermaximum Hyper Velocity and they shoot about 6 inches off, so sooner or later I will have to set up just for them and use them up.

Fartsinpublic, I know the feeling, I would love to purchase a new scope, but..... It was all I could do to save up and purchase the different brands of ammo. Have a great day guys.

I have a Savage MKII and it is a great rifle and would probably be better in more capable hands. Below is the group size of different brands of ammunition from 100 yards. I was trying to find out what it really likes. On the day I did this review I actually shot it against a custom 10/22 and a CZ452 of which you can go here to see the results/pictures.

How do you like the EFR scope on the Mark 2 compared to the APV on the 10/22? I've had my eye on one for a while and am comparing others to it, but keep being drawn back to the EFR.

The EFR scope to me is a better scope because of it's clarity and forgiveness in eye relief and here is what I mean by forgiveness in eye relief. I have found on the APV you must have a perfect cheek weld looking down the direct center of the scope to prevent from seeing a little black ring around the outside. I have heard others refer to this as faster acquisition as it pertains to the EFR. I must say though because of the extra power of the APV I feel like I can shoot smaller groups with it at 100yards. The perfect 22 scope to me would have been the EFR with the same power as the APV.

That is exactly what I am looking for. A higher-powered EFR. That would be ideal on my TRR.

I took the Savage out today, after sighting it at 50 yards. The first trip was getting it onto the bullseye. 5 rounds.

Today, I had different ammunition: Federal Match, Federal Champion, CCI standard, Remington Subsonic, and Eley Team.

I played around with the Federal Match at 25 yards, Shooting at the small figure in the bottom right hand corner of the IPDA target. 10 shots.

I tried Federal at 50 yards but it didn't group well for me, at all. So I tried some CCI Standard, 15 rounds:

I lastly, tried some Eley Team at 50 yards. 10 rounds.

The misses were obviously from a lack of concentration. I'll work at 50 yards until I can get all of them more into one hole. However, I was happy with how I did anyways.
