257 BOB / long or short action?

First time here , can someone tell me if you can do a 257R in a savage short action or will it have to be long?

    Thanks for any help.

Short action is doable but for the benefit of being able to seat bullets to the rifling or close, the long action is the way to go.

Re: 257 BOB / long or short action?

The custom shop did mine on the short action, and I have no problem seating bullets out to about 2.930". With the 100 gr Nosler Partition that I used for deer this year, it means that the entire bullet is in the cartridge neck and not sticking into the powder space. Heavier, ie longer, bullets could be a problem, and I will try some 115-117 gr bullets this summer, but I am not trying to turn my 257 Roberts into a 25-06. A 100 gr Nosler Partition at 3000 fps will do anything I need done to a mature whitetail. Penetrated from right front ribs into left rear leg on my buck.

I know it's the conventional wisdom to use a long action, but I think that's with Remington and other actions... the Savage "short" action is pretty long.

I have a 6mm Remington (same parent case) in a Savage long action, that I bought used from another member here. I load the bullets either touching the lands or 0.010" jump, generally 95gr bullets or lighter.

Also just built a .260 around one of Savage's varmint actions, with a DBM. For shiggles, I put one of the 6mm Rem cartridges into the box magazine, and there was plenty of clearance (almost 1/8"), more than my .260 load with a 140gr Berger HPBT LR. I think a 105-107gr bullet loaded to the lands would still fit..

I also have a 257R from the savage custom shop with a short action. I have no problems with seating depth. I have been using nosler 100gr BT and nosler 110gr accubond.

I cheated and put mine on an older 110 short action. gives me the best of both worlds!
