    Savage 340 E Series 222 - Rechamber to 223?

    Savage 340 E Series 222 – chamber to 223?

My father gave me his 340 E series .222. I am frustrated with buying 222 ammo. It seems I really only find it online and very rarely find it locally. Also the cost is riduclus. I can walk into Walmart and get 223 any day of the week for half the cost.

Can the 340 be chambered to 223? What would be the typical cost for this?

    Thanks!

If I was lucky enough to have a .222 I would fight anybody who suggested I rechamber it to anything, much less .223!

you could, But you would ruin any collector value. you may find some one willing to trade you a .223. If you rechamber it, then it is only 1/2 dads old gun.

Learn to reload and have cheap ammo forever. You will then have that capability for any other rifle/caliber you want in the future. Leave it a .222 and you will be a lot happier in the future. Even shooting .22 is no longer shooting on the cheap.

one thing to keep in mind is the quality of the generic box 223 vs good 223. once you compare the good 223 to the only available 222 which naturally is the good stuff you see there isnt much difference in price. another and possibly the main consideration is 222 twist is just right for 50/52 grain varmint bullets whereas 223 bullets are leaning toward the 1 to 9 etc twist for the heavier bullets. hope this info helps you reconsider the change, bobn

I would never change "odd" over to "even".

Save your brass. Neck sizing brass with a hand press is a piece of cake.

Brick of primers, some bullets and a pound of H322 will let you boom boom long time, GI.

I'll take all your shot brass if you decide otherwise...

Numricks had a few .223 barrels for the 340 at one time. you could change it maybe and still have your .222

It's a shame the 222 had fallen by the wayside as it has. It is a great little cartridge. I would not even consider rechambering it. If you want a 223, sell the 340 to someone who loves the 222 and buy one.

remember though when you can find a box of 20rds of winchester 222 ammo and shoot it through your 340 and it shoots 3/4" groups its hard to say no to keeping that original
