Question What are you loading for your 6.5-284?

Not so sure the 6.5-284 can be considered a wildcat cartridge at this point as many maufactures are chambering for this cartridge. Having said this, what are you loading for this cartridge configuration. I am currently loading 48 gr. of IMR4350 atop a 107SMK for bbl. break in. My 284 Win. brass has been necked down to .264, neck turned, flash hole deburre, necks chamfered and primer pockets uniformed. When the weather cooperates I will get to the range to start my bbl. break in. Hope the weather is warmer where you all are. MTG

Interesting, not one reply regarding reloading 6.5-284 cartridges. Is everyone shooting factory loads or is there another reason? Just attempting to spark an interest and conversation. MTG

Actually there is a thread going on in the standard cartridge section, the 6.5 x 284 is not considered a wildcat anymore, it's bonafide.

I don't remember the exact charge weight but I was using Ramshot Magnum, 139gr Lapua Scenars, Norma brass, and CCI BR2 primers.

6.5x284 Lapua brass, RL-17 49.5 gr, CCI 400, 140 Berger Hunting VLD, 26" CBI LV barrel is most accurate (.3-4's@100) at MV=3050 followed by a close second with H4350.

I have worked up loads for hybrid 100v to a max of 52 gr. backed off to 51 gr with 140 berger VLD hunting for 3120 FPS. I also worked up to a max of 52 gr. and backed off to 51 gr of reloader 17 with 140 berger 140 VLD hunting for 3180 FPS. This is the most accurate load so far 3/4 in at 200 yards . I use lapua brass cci BR2 primers Bullets are seated 20 th back of lands. My rifle is a savage 12 F class with 30 in Bbl 1 in 8 twist THESE ARE MAX LOADS SO START LOWER AND WORK Bionicbob

A couple things here stand out and make me curious...

Target rifle or hunter? My background is from a target shooting perspective, if you're a hunter then ignore some of this.

***First and foremost, I realize you say you're doing barrel break-in.*** I have been known to use up whatever misc. components, odds & ends that I have laying around for such a purpose. That may be what you're doing, if not:

8"-8.5" & 9" barrel twists are the most common for 6.5x.284 set-ups, which usually means a 130-142 gr. bullet. The 107's are really light for caliber bullets, did you just have them laying around? Or, is your barrel a much slower twist? I had some 120 SMK BTHP's that I tried for fireforming my brass. The accuracy wasn't very good compared to the Cauterucio 141's I normally use. I use
Krieger 8.5" twist and Lilja 9" twist though.

My 6.5x.284's are the "Shehane" improved version, so my powder charges wouldn't apply here.
Hodgdon 4831sc and 4350 are probably the most common powders, along with Re17, Re22. IMR4350 isn't so common with this caliber, if you're hunting and not after extreme accuracy, use what you've got.

    Good luck and enjoy.
