    A 260 5 R barrel on a 10FP

I sent in my 10 FP for repair (again) to the scope mount threads, the hole had some slag in the threads when I got it and I got one of the screws stuck, sent it in and Savage removed the screw and retapped the hole. I recently switched to a 30mm Viper PST and had to remount with a DNZ one piece, when threading the mount in I felt slight slippage and stopped, called Savage and they had me send the rifle back to them. This particular 10 FP in 308 does not shoot near as well as my 223 10 FP, the 223 often shoots one holers 3 shot groups, the 308 has a hard time getting under 1 inch. I asked them to look at the barrel and mounting, but am now thinking about asking them to switch out the barrel to a 5 r in 308 or 260 since they have it there. Anyone have experience with Savage doing this type of work and any input on the 308 or 260 selection?

I know remington will but svage, well,it depends on who you talk to.I didnt know they offered a 5r barrel on anything.Maybe someone will chime in with the best contact person to talk to and get it strightened out.It sounds like they should replace the reciever if it is stripped out being new and all.I personally drill and tap them out to 8-40 tpi and get a good rail with that screw arrangement. If the barrel shoots lousy then by all means insist they change it out.
Willing to give back for what the sport has done for me!

Well just finished talking with the Savage CS lady, (very nice lady, especially since I have been a PIA customer with lots of questions), they will be installing the 5 R barrel in 308 on the rifle for me. The old barrel checked out fine within 1 MOA but I was going to go with a threaded barrel and muzzle brake later anyway so I decided just to let them do it there since they make the rifle in the first place. I will get a 260 rifle new to test out and keep the 308 as my main shooter in the mean time. Will report back when I take it to the range in a few weeks.
