reloading the 250-3000 savage.

Sorry if this is a stupid question guys. Getting 250-3000 factory rounds is getting harder and harder to find so I decided it’s time to get brass, bullets and a die set for this cartridge.

I have found everything I need from a local retailer except for the bullets. Is the 250-3000 bullet a .25 cal .257?

Yes it is. Are you loading for a model 99? If so we would need to know when it was made to tell if it can shoot bullets heavier than 87 grains accurately.

how can i tell when it was made? i took my first deer with winchester 100grain silvertip ammo and i remember shooting 1'' groups at 100 yards.

This cartridge is my favorite of all time. I have lots of load data for bolt rifles with 24" barrels but I do have a 99 that caused me all kinds of grief with anything above 75 grains. I settled on 38.5 grains of Reloader 17 with a 75 grain Vmax. That load prints just over an inch at 200 yards out of my 1916 model 99 takedown. IMR 4064, Varget and H380 all work well in the .250-3000, but dont over look reloader 17 either for heavier bullets. I have great performance with it and 115 bergers out of my bolt rifles.

Take a cleaning rod and a tight fitting patch, mark the rod with a sharpie, push it down the barrel until it makes a complete revolution, mark rod again, use a tape measure then you have 1 turn in ? inches twist rate.
Apply that to reloading manuals for selecting bullets accordingly.

Also, My A&B 250 savage Stevens 200 shoots 100 grain ballastic tips at 3000 fps at muzzle with honest .75 5 shot 100 yd groups.

I shot my first deer with a model 99 250-3000 and winchester 100 gr silvertips too!And then I killed a bunch more after that.I still have the gun.I have'nt shot it in years,,,but it will never leave the family.

Yep, standard 25 caliber (.257) bullet. I've had good [accuracy] success with Reloader 15 and IMR 4895 in my 1940s vintage M99 250-3000 (1/14 twist), shooting 100g Nosler Ballistic Tips. As always, depends on the condition and particulars of your individual rifle as to powder loads, but generally start low and work up. On M99s I generally find the [accuracy] sweet spot somewhere in the medium to medium-high powder load. Also depends on what your shooting - I hunt Pronghorn so use 100g. If you're shooting prairie dogs etc, the old 87g or even lower might suffice.

Have been away from this site for a while so I just saw this thread. Best accuracy with my two 99s in .250 Savage has been with the Speer 87 gr. SP over 36.0 gr of RL-15 for a measured velocity of 2,892 fps. Next was the Hornady 87 gr. SP over 30.5 of AA-2015 at 2,808 fps. The 87 gr. Nosler Ballistic Tip clocked 2,812 with that same load.

Fastest 100 gr reload for me was the Nosler 100 gr. BT over 35.0 gr. of RL-15 for 2,800 fps. For comparison, the 87 gr. WW yellow box factory load yielded 3,003 fps., while the WW 100 gr. yellow box silvertip loading was a bit slower at 3,690 fps..
