22LR to emulate long range center fire target ??

I have a mkII that shoots fairly tight like 1.25" - 1.5" at 100 yards and I have read that shooting a 22LR at 200-300 yards is about like shooting F class.

I was thinking I might give it a try, so to make it pretty even, what distance, what target would I use and what power would I have my scope set on to say emulate 32x at 1000 yards ??

It's quite popular to do this. You can do a search called mini-Palma where you can get targets downsized to the 100/200y distance that emulates shooting 800/1000 Palma except using a .22LR.

hmm never thought about using a 22 to practice with i usually just shoot 1" dots @ 300 i'm going to have to search this also sounds cheaper than what i do now.

Also, to expound on your original questions:

A 32X magnification at 1k yards is like a 6.4X magnification at 200 yards. In my personal opinion a 6X fixed power scope is the ideal scope on a 22 rimfire anyway so this would be close enough for my liking. The other aspect is duplicating the target size in perspective.

So to put it in perspecitve you would need a 2" 10 ring at 200 yards. The NRA TQ-4 target is almost a perfect scaled match for 1/5 the distance.

10 Ring =2” (.5” on each side from X)
1” space between the rest ….
9 Ring = 4”
8 Ring =6”
7 Ring = 8”
6 Ring =10”
5 Ring =12”

Pretty much any MKI or MKII rifle should do it for you. I'm waiting on my FV-SR to come in so I can start building a suppressed 22LR for extra quiet varmit shooting. The plain MKII FV runs about $200 and shoots plenty accurate from the folks I have spoken to.

If you are going to try it, try out some wolf target match ammo. I think there are better types out there, but these shot pretty good for me. 1/4"-3/8" at 25 yards plastic stock and the wrong scope. Wind was pretty gusty and groups were about 1.25" - 1.5" at 100.

Cheap for a while, until you decide to buy an anschutz.

The trick to using a .22 to train with is that most or them have shorty junior sized stocks. You will probably need a cheek piece and butt plate to get the stock close to the fit of your big rifle.

Just picked up a Boyds' TactiCool Savage Mark II Heavy Barrel Channel Unfinished Laminate Rifle Stock.
Had to get the bottom metal too.

Looks like an adult size stock and the photo looks like a normal tactical stock.

We will see.

What I cant figure out (for instance) is the drop and wind holdoff at 200 yards almost exactly matches a 308 at 800 yards, so I would imagine the bullet spread on the X Ring would be about the same, but in mini palma a typical X ring is 2" at 200 yards from what I have read.

I was thinking that to emulate say a 308 at 1000 yards, IE 22LR at 250 yards, you would still use a 5" x ring and say a 12X scope to emulate a 50X scope at 1000.

Palma uses a 1moa X ring and F-Class uses a .5moa X ring.

Wow 10" target at 1000 iron sights.
Now a 1" X ring makes sense at 100 yards for mini Palma.

It's a good comparison. My son and I shoot .22LR at 330 yards often at one of those larger Dirty Bird targets (I forget if it's 10 or 11" diameter). Point being, you can hit it no problem once you figure out the elevation. However, once you get some wind, it's like shooting a .308 at 800-1000 yards with some wind.

Shooting with a scope, use target TQ-3/2 at 100 yards, or TQ-4 at 200 Yards.

Shooting with "iron", use TQ-4 at 100 yards, or A-21 (C) at 200 yards.
