MKIIFVT any one have/use one?

Hi folks, have any of you used or played around with a MKIIFVT?
This model is the 22 with the globe front and peep rear. Looking at getting something for my kids to train biathlon with.
Their is a a guy who is making biathlon stocks for the MKII so I could drop it into that.
Thoughts?

Any word or pictures of the biathlon stock. One thing I really dislike with my FVT is the factory plastic stock. It just doesn't fit right.

I'm using Savages for my Biathlon program with stocks made by Clayton at Eastern Sierra Armory. I could not be happier with them. There was a lot of thought that went into designing these stocks. Clayton made me a custom stock for my Suhl as well. These are the first generation stocks, the newer ones are much nicer.



He has also manufactured/adapted sights that are IBU legal.

I did do a modification to them so they could be used with larger people. I put in threaded inserts into the butt and am using spacers to change the LOP on them.

I was going to pm you but then thought maybe others might have the same questions.

Are you using the sights that come stock on the Savage? Or?

Any mods for the cold?

How does the mag release work with that stock?

I am using the stock sights that came with the Savage, they are the target ones made by Williams. They are ok, I occasionally have to check the set screws on them as they drift out. The front sight I ended up applying red loctite to because they would drift as well. Since I am using the rifles for beginners and Juniors, the rifles stayed rack at the line like summer biathlon. So there is no need to get snow covers for them.

They rifle has not been modified for the cold, they are consistent enough to hit the prone sized target. Trying to knock out an X-Ring in the cold is a completely different animal.

I found that CCI Standard ammo shoots quite well out of the rifle in all conditions, much better than the Eley Sport. The Lapua and Fiocchi case will occasionally get stuck. But that is easily remedied by running a bore snake through.

The mag release is set back into the stock and can be tricky to access the first time with gloves. I will try to take more detailed pictures sometime this week.

Wow those mag releases look tough to get to! It is not much worse than the aftermarket stock on my MKIIFV
Not that it is a big deal with juniors as they are not dealing with that but still looks tough.
Have you looked in person at the sights they offer?

I have been trying to figure out what I am going to do for my kids and this has been one of the options. It is a little daunting considering the stock is more $$ than the rifle...
I have even been looking at the PWS T3 Summit action, at least it might get them used to the Fortiner action.

They are not bad after you get used to them. The key is to follow the contour of the rifle or the base of the magazine into the mag release. It would be nice if the leaf spring were a little bit longer or bigger.

The sights are brand new this year and I've not seen them yet, I'll probably get one or 2 sometime later this year.

I looked at the PWS T3, but after you add up the cost of all the parts and time involved, you might as well buy the Savage from ESA. If you got that route, an easy harness to get you going is the TAG Biathlon.

I have looked at my own MKIIFV with and I don't think figuring out a better mag release would be that hard. I just have to do it!

The real prob I see with the PWS is the lack of a Biathlon type stock!

I did get my rifles through CMP, it was much less expensive to do it that way than to buy completed rifles from Clayton.

There is a guy at our club that did up the PWS, but he drinks the 10/22 KoolAid... He used the Tag Biathlon sling with QD sockets that were drilled and epoxied into his stock.

I do have some of the TAG stuff I like it.

I do like the PWS thought but as you say the ergonomics are the key.
