Has anyone put together a 5.45x39

I was searching and found a few people that were talking about building one, but I couldn't find anyone that actually had one together. I would like to build one and have no parts so I'm open to anything!

Sounds like a very interesting project and should make an excellent varmint shooter.

Fred Moreo at SSS has the Soviet style boltheads.

We have a PTG 223 bolt head at the shop that was ordered for testing, I found a few rounds in a pile of miscellaneous ammo and the 5.45x39 fit perfectly in the PTG bolt head. That's what gave me the idea to build one...

The hard part will be making a barrel the right dimensions. From the research i've done the ideal size is .214 bore and .221 groove.

I plan on shooting the surplus stuff, I don't think I can re-load ammo as cheap as it can be bought for; although the prices have went up quite a bit along with most other AR and AK stuff...

The bolt is different from 223. At least, you have to change bolts in an ar to run 5.45

The bolt face of the 5.45x39 is .014" larger than the 223Rem. I tried the round on a couple different bolt's, like my 223 rem 700, my 223 marlin and my ar15 and it wouldn't fit; but it does fit in the 223 PTG bolt head he have at the shop. So no the round shouldn't fit a standard 223 bolt, but I must have one that is machined slightly larger, and it fits. Hence the reason I want to build a 5.45x39

Oh nice....I've tossed around the idea quite a bit after shooting my buddies ar in 5.45 and another buddies vepr. I should have bought one of the factory savage rifles in 5.45 when they were out :-/
