    Barrel question ? help

Does anyone on here know anything about the
so called savage accuracy barrels that Author Brown
has listed on his site..I was hoping for a full 1 inch
but I see they are a little smaller, and my concern
was the barrel heating up faster than a bull barrel..
And it looks they are all chrome moly, which I know nothing about.
Thanks a lot for all your valued input on this...John

I'm not sure I would bother with them for a match barrel. If it is a TC "special" it is a different story since those have mounting blocks welded on and a bunch of other work that regular barrel makers will not touch.

If you want a match barrel, you would be better off to go with a Mc Gowan or a Shilen or Criterion through NSS. If NSS has it in stock you will get it a LOT faster than trying to go to any of the barrel makers directly. If you order a custom through a retailer, I think you will get it faster that way too, those guys have more swing than us mere mortals.

I will add that I am very satisfied with my Shilen 243 AI. Jim had that delivered to my door 2 days after he took my money.

I ordered my 17 fireball barrel through brown. It's .805 at the muzzle. Haven't finished load development yet but on my ocw ladder it shot 4 three shot groups between .454" and .541". It took about 5 weeks to get it.

Chrome-moly is a carbon tool steel and will rust easily if not protected. Basically it will need to be blued or painted.

Their prices are no better than direct from a named barrel maker ? Which means that if you got it from SSS or NSS the price would be even better and you would actually know who made it.

The reason I got mine from them is because nobody else was gonna build me a 17 fireball at that price in a months time. As far as the other more standard chambers you are probably right. Then again I shot half inch 3 shot groups with 4 different loads with no development and 50 rounds down the barrel. I've not shot any great 5 shot groups yet but I'm confident the barrel is capable of it. Also since I also own an encore I wanted to see the quality of thier barrels in case I ever wanted another encore barrel.
