12 VLP DBM - Scope and Base question

Got my Savage 12 VLP DBM in .204 back from CDI Precision they did an excellent job by the way. I'm getting ready to order my scope, rings and base. I've been doing some reading, and I'm thinking I might need a 20 minute scope rail or base given bullet drop at 500 yards. My concern however is that the rail might interfere with ejection given how the opening is on the 12 VLP DBM. Anyone have thoughts or suggestions on this possible issue?

I do have my scope picked at this point. And rings from the manufacturer, per the pictures will require a rail.
At the moment I'm planning to go with a Vortex Optics Viper HIS LR 6-24x50 with the XLR reticule. Was planning on picking up "precision matched rings" from Vortex. They look pretty sturdy... I've seen other rings that looked even beefier, but for the life of me I can't remember where or who makes'm. Suggestions again would be appreciated. I'd appreciate some rail recommendations. I was thinking something from Weaver or just browsing Brownells or Midway till I saw one I liked with good reviews. Suggestions/comments appreciated. I'll do a full write up on the rifle once its back together and I get some rounds down the tube.

Every choice you mentioned above, are solid choices. You will not have any ejection problems while using that rail. The rings that you are talking about are made by Seekins for Vortex. Excellent choice in rings.

    Thanks RatMag, appreciate the info!

I've got a 20 MOA base by Weaver on the way. 35 bucks sounds good to me. I have no problem spending more. But multiple folks are saying that they have to cut down the Nightforce or several other brands as they are too long if you want to use low or medium height rings with a 50mm or bigger scope. I hope its short enough, I'd like to use medium or low rings!

Anyone have any suggestions on SHORT 20 MOA base that will fit a Savage short action? (One you don't have to cut down?)

I have the weaver rail on my VLP DBM. I went with the 0 moa, simply because it was in stock locally. Otherwise the 20 moa would have been my choice. I have lots of adjustment on my scope however, enough to get me to 900+ yards with 223. Here's how it looks with Leupold PRW rings and Bushnell Elite Tactical scope, just to give you an idea. Ejection is not an issue.

Excellent photo, clears up my concern! I appreciate that!

Let me confirm this... 900+ yard with .223?

My scope has 80 minutes of vertical adjustment according to Bushnell. I have checked this and got about 79.5. When I sighted in the rifle I had the turret in the middle of it's adjustment range, and I had to adjust down about 5 minutes which leaves about 45 minutes to go up. According to my calculations I will only need 40.4 minutes to reach 1000 yards. So yes 900+ is achievable with the scope I have. However this is pushing the scope, and the cartridge to its limits and I probably won't be shooting it past 600.

I've mounted scopes before, but always on a 0 MOA rail or with no rail at all, Never with a 20 MOA base.

What is the correct way to do this? Obviously with a 20 MOA base either the rifle barrel is level or the base is.
