Nice to hear, that actually makes the Axis a bit more appealing, with all the other modifications that people have figured out for them, I may just have to pick one up one of these days.
Thanks for the info Jim.
So if I haven't mentioned it yet my .25-06 Axis is destined to be a project gun on the site this year. Part of that project will be converting it from .25-06 to .284 Win. Doing a little testing with my .25-06 magazine I found that the shorter round would only feed consistently if you worked the bolt forward really fast - otherwise the round would slide free of the magazine lips and the tip of the bullet would drop and hit the face of the breech of the barrel.
Today I happened to be out to SSS and I noticed he had a couple Axis rifles sitting on the shelf with short-action magazines, so explaining what I had found with the L/A magazine I was wondering just how much room for the bullet there would be in a S/A magazine. So we grabbed a .284 case and a .22-250 Axis magazine to see and we were both a little surprised at how much room there was. Suffice to say I'll be able to use a S/A magazine with it and have plenty of room to utilize all but the longest VLD-style bullets without having to seat them deep to fit the magazine.
With the .284 case measuring 2.170" in length it's safe to say one could build a .257 Roberts (2.233") 6.5x55 (2.165"), or 7x57 (2.235") with a S/A magazine. If I were a bit smarter I would have snapped a pic with my phone, but that thought didn't cross my mind until I got home.
