I have found a good alternative to Varget it is a Hogdon CFE223, I have tried it in several calibers all with great success, and have averaged over 100 FPS more than I have using Varget just like when I switched from H4350 to RL17, and it meters like sand to boot, and on the same note it seems to burn cooler also, here are some of the calibers I have tried it in with and have had good results.

I saw that, I will end up trying it, the lever part swayed me away, when I here the word lever the first thing that comes to mind is a 40-70 govt,and a 405gr bullet traveling 1750 FPS there's nothing wrong with that, just not my kind of shooting, I tried the Superformance it was OK, just not good enough to sway me away from the tried and trued H4831, which is a hard act to follow.

Another good shooting powder for moderate cases is the IMR 8208XBR. The XBR stands for eXtreme Bench Rest, it's a very temperature insensative powder that meters well and has given me excellent accuracy. The only downside is a lack of data for many cartridges since it's relatively new, but on the ones where I have found data it has been a great powder.

You know if that slot on the shelf where they stack the Varget wasn't always empty, at the place where I get my supplies, I probably would not have tried it, being the creature of habit that I am.

Another I have been using is Alliant AR-COMP. Supposed to be a reformulated RL-15 but the burn rate is close to Varget. Some call it "Swedish Varget".

I've never had any luck with ball powders.
Yes It is a ball powder, just an FYI a 223 AI will hold 34gr of the stuff the FPS numbers are in the stratosphere.

I found it at a local mom and pops place in the next town from me, I love going there cause it's gossip central, they old timers are hysterical.
anything that's not a 45-120 sharps, is one of them fancy calibers.

I have a friend that is having good luck with CFE223 as well. He is using it in a .243Win and a .222rem
I been looking all over for some of this CFE to try and the report I get is Good Luck trying to get any of it..My local dealer can't even get it he said..

Love to "shop" in those kind of places!! The only bad thing is.....you just have to expect to spend an hour of your time to pick up a pound of powder....and a "sack full of stories."
I can't confirm that, but most new powders seem to better when it comes to being temp sensitive.

Look at "Riflemans Journal" for an article on IMR 4320 as a replacement for Varget in 308 Win. It was very promising. Alas, can't even find that now.
