Release Agent For Devcon when used on Tape- Recommendation

Seems to me that we covered this b4 when I about welded an action to a stock by using a release agent from another bedding kit w/ Devcon. It worked great on the metal parts, but the taped parts- I used blue painters tape- stock bad. I am getting ready to bed my new 260AI re-build- new stock and barrel- and don't want to experience that again.

What works very good on BOTH metal and Tape when using Devcon? I think someone wrote to use Kiwi neutral shoe polish? If so, do you buff it off and just leave a residual coating or do you leave it smeared on as it goes on when you wipe it on???

    Thanks,

I use Johnsons paste floor and furniture wax and apply it fairly thick so as to fill any small voids.

Does it release the tape too?

I do not know....I've never used any tape. I would run a small test first.

Kiwi neutral shoe polish one or two coats and buff it.

I second the neutral shoe polish. I've used it on tape a couple of times. Works well.

I like peanut butter. Smooth not crunchy.

Yes, smooth.....the crunchy gets in the way of the bedding compound.

OK Peanut Butter Lovers!- When I buff the Kiwi, I am assuming It leaves some on? Do I buff it just enough to remove the "hazy"look or am I trying to get it all off or what? Sorry to be labor this point, I abot ruined a custom mauser 7-08 cause the release agent that I used (it was from a kit I got from Midway- forget the name) worked great on the metal but not at all on the taped area- recoil lug, 1st several inches of the barrel, etc.

I use Pam cooking spray and have never had a problem withthe metal, wood/synthetic, or tape.

I'm gonna do one tonight so I can let you know how this one ends up in a couple days...LOL

I've used cooking spray at first, then when I learned about Kiwi Neutral Shoe Polish that's been the ticket ever since. 2 coats wipe it off and bed, works well on plastic, wood, and tape. I've bedded with Marine Tech and mostly Devcon.

Use regular masking tape with a couple coats of kiwi shoe polish. Devcon will stick to blue painters tape even with shoe polish present. Don't ask me why or how, it just does!

Buff till it's hazy. You want to make it smooth, not wipe it off. I use regular masking tape. Haven't used blue painters tape.

Trapp, thanks for the tip, I have always used the blue tape thinking that it will come off the recoil lug, barrel , etc. easier. I will try regular this time.

No problem....learned from experience to not use blue painters tape with Devcon. It came apart but I was a bit worried for a little while!

Re: Release Agent For Devcon when used on Tape- Recommendation

So, whats better, Johnsons paste wax or Kiwi Neutral shoe polish? Or are they about the same? I have always used what came in the kit- Accuraglas, etc. Last time tried the Pam Olive oil spray- worked good. Then tried the infamous Accuraglas or Bedford (whatever the name was) Midway kit's release agent w/ Devcon and blue tape= bad deal. exacto knife, scratched action/ barrel getting it out. Very bad experience. took long time to get it out, not too happy w/ that one. I'm putting my this years F class rig together- 260AI, SSS action, 28.5" Bull bbl Shilen Sel. match, new to me Stockade LRBR stock w/ weight init, Nightforce 12-42x NP2DD, BasixII trigger, SSS recoil lug, Burris Sig rings 30MM. Its gonna be a shooter.

Sounds like a great gun!! I've only done a couple bedding jobs, but they were done with kiwi shoe polish, no problems with sticking (knock on wood). I do prefer brown though... It's what I had around, saved $3 for some extra bullets. The brown doesn't stick either -- I did one time dump a whole tube of superglue in my action though... that was a fun day of rubbing solvents and scraping with a razor ;D

Re: Release Agent For Devcon when used on Tape- Recommendation

Simple solution--dump the masking tape and go with vinyl electricians tape and a good paste wax--Kiwi, Johnson's, whatever. I use Minwax cause that's what I have on hand. FWIW, I've never had much success with the light weight oils-if I use oil, it's 30W. A little messy, but I don't own any one piece guns! Steve

Well, the standard masking tape and kiwi natrual shoe polish worked. Had a hard time getting out the recoil lug that had tape on the front and 3 sides, but other than that and gooping up the stock a bit, its the best bedding job I have ever done. Thanks for the tips
