    Chime in

    CHIMING
    Before shooting my new Savage 223 I reviewed my notebook for the Savage 223 I failed to get shooting accurately with cast bullets in 2003/4.
    In the note book there are several mentions of "chiming", a ringing noise when the gun was fired.
    On 1/30/13 I shot the new rifle, and about every shot made the gun chime.
    Dave, shooting next to me, heard it too.
    I've never heard of this before, never had another gun do it.
    Have you?
    Thanks;
    joe b.

    I have a 243 built on a long action in a boyds varmint thumbhole stock that makes what I would call a humming sound after I shoot it. I gave had two different barrels on it with the same sound after firing. I have even gone as far as putting pillars in the stock and completely bedded the action with no change. The accuracy is good so I havent spent too much time trying to chase it down because I dont want to hurt the group size.

    Could it be barrel harmonics occuring with certain loads but not all? Is it a sporter barrel? Maybe changing load not barrel is a solution.

    Mine does it regardless of the load. The reason I changed the barrel was I purchased a CBI instead of a factory barrel
